Three Brothers Join the Navy

The three Staple brothers, all former farm hands near Jewell, Ia., joined the Navy Wednesday and left a few hours later for the Great Lakes Naval training school near Chicago, Ill.  Lester (left), 24, and Charles (right), 20, are making sure that George, 22, brought his toothbrush for the journey. Lester tried to join a few weeks ago and failed, but his two brothers brought him luck this time.

Lester, Charles and George Staples, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Staples of Jewell, came home Thursday for a short leave from the Navy. This is the first time they have been home since enlisting shortly after the Pearl Harbor attack. They have been stationed on the same ship and together but they think they will be separated when they return. They recently saw action in the battle of Saipan.
