Eighty men from Kossuth county lost their lives while in the service of their country in World War II.

James Robert Schlotter was born Aug. 11, 1914 to Ed Joseph and Sarah Rockford Schlotter. He died July 30, 1945 and is memorialized at the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines and in Oakland Cemetery, Keokuk, IA.

Petty Officer Schlotter served in World War II with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Indianapolis (CA-35) when it was sunk by a Japanese submarine. He was MIA/FOD/KIA and awarded the Purple Heart.
