Cdr. John R. Rutledge, USN, is the son of Mrs. G. E. Rutledge of 520 Water Street, Webster City, Iowa. Cdr. Rutledge is the present Commanding Officer of Air Anti-Submarine Squadron Thirty One, temporarily based ashore at the Naval Air Station, Quonset Point, Rhode Island.
He graduated from the Webster City high school in 1938 and attended Iowa State college, Ames, Iowa from 1938 to July, 1941 at which time he enlisted in the Navy and was selected for the Naval Aviation Cadet Program. Commander Rutledge completed his flight training at Corpus Christi, Texas in July, 1924 at which time he was commissioned as an Ensign and received his Navy Wings.
From 1942 to 1948 Cdr. Rutledge served with the following units of the U. S. Atlantic Fleet; Headquarters Squadron Nine, Carrier Aircraft - Service Unit 22 and Torpedo Squadron Ninety-Seven. He was flight deck officer aboard the aircraft carriers USS Charger, (CVE-30) and the USS Randolph, (CV-15).
In 1948 he attended the General Line school at the United States naval post graduate school at Monterey, California. Upon completion of the school at Monterey, Cdr. Rutledge returned to the naval air advanced training command at the Naval Air Station Corpus Christi as training officer for advanced training unit five. In 1951 he attended the combat information center school at the Naval Air Station, Glenview, Ill. He then joined the staff of Commander Carrier Division Fourteen. In October, 1952 he reported to air anti-sub-squadron 32 as their executive officer. The squadron was temporarily based at Quonset Point.
Immediately prior to reporting as the Commanding Officer of Air Anti Submarine Squadron Thirty One on May 31, 1956, Cdr. Rutledge was in Washington on duty in the aviation training division of the office of the chief of naval operations.
Cdr. and Mrs. Rutledge and their two daughters, Dorothy 12, Ann 5 and their son Charlie, live at 67 Wanton Shippie Rd., East Greenwich, Rhode Island.
