Doon, Iowa –Mrs. Elizabeth Mann received a telegram from the navy department informing her that her son, Jake A. Mann, is missing in action. Jake, 22, joined the navy last July and was a third class gunner’s mate. He was born and raised here.

Jacob Albert Mann was born Jan. 21, 1921 to Jacob and Elizabeth Solon Mann. He died Mar. 29, 1943 and is memorialized at the Tablets of the Missing, Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, England.
Petty Officer Mann served in World War II with the U.S. Navy as a member of the Armed Guard serving aboard a merchant vessel when it was torpedoed and sunk in the North Atlantic. He was MIA/FOD/KIA and awarded the Purple Heart.
