Raymond Johnson Dies After Long Illness

Raymond Johnson, 64, died Thursday afternoon, April 8, 1976 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines where he had been a patient since Jan. 3.

Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p.m. at Bethesda Lutheran Church with the Rev. Norbert Jolivette officiating and with burial in Evergreen cemetery at Jewell. The Becker Funeral home was in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers were Lloyd Walker, Francis LeMaster, Roy Nelson, Max Whitlock, Robert Erickson, Stuart Schlafke. Honorary pallbearers were Supt. Dick Textor: School Board members: Dr. L.Z. Lindemann, Curtis Thoreson, Maurice Wilcox, Robert Olthoff, Varlen Carlson; Treas: Beryl Cottington; and Principals: Dr. Larry Beard, John Monroe and Willis Welp.

Raymond Johnson was born April 6, 1912, at Jewell, the son of Magnus and Marie Danielson Johnson. He was married June 8, 1943 to Oriet Jegtevig at Jewell, and the couple had always resided in Jewell. He owned and operated the Johnson General store for many years. For the past 15 years he served as business secretary at the South Hamilton Community School.

He is survived by his wife; his mother, Mrs. Marie Johnson of Jewell; two children, Mark Johnson of Hillsboro, N.C., and Mrs. Solveig Walstrom of Ames; one brother, Wilbur of San Bernardino, Calif..; and one sister, Mrs. William (Mildred) Fudge of Atlantic.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1953.

He was a member of Bethesda Lutheran church where he had served as Sunday school superintendent for many years. He was a member of the American Association of School boards.

He was a graduate of Luther College at Decorah and served in the Navy in World War II from 1942 to 1945.
