Obituary:
LuVern "Red" Johnson, 77, of 800 Tennyson Street in Stratford, passed away at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa on Monday, December 12th due to cancer.
He was born August 19, 1917 in Stratford, the son of Charles and Lorena (Spong) Johnson.
On January 22, 1987 he married Mildred Stout Alvestad at the McGuire Bend United Brethren Church northwest of Stratford.
Red was a 1936 graduate of the Stratford High School. He was employed at Quick's Mobil Service Station in Stratford for 51 years before retiring in 1987.
He was a former member of the American Legion Frederick Sonksen Post #136 of Stratford and a veteran of World War II serving with the Army Air Corp, Signal Division in the European Theater.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and a step-son.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred of Stratford; a sister, Vernice Dayton of Fort Dodge; a step-daughter Rose Mary Risetter of Domingues Hills, CA; a mother-in-law Ora Benton of Webster City, IA; two nephews, Charles Dayton of Iowa City, IA; Noel Johnson of Des Moines, IA; and a niece Janice Wiley of Chicago, IL.
Services will be held on Thursday, December 15th at 10 a.m. at the McGuire Bend United Brethren Church, northwest of Stratford with Revs. Jack Brady and Dale Kelley officiating.
Interment will be in the South Marion Cemetery southeast of Stratford.
Friends may call at the Stark-Welin Funeral Home in Stratford on Wednesday evening from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. and at the church on Thursday morning from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.
Stark-Welin Funeral Directors in Stratford is in charge of the arrangements.

LuVern August ‘Red' Johnson was born Aug. 19, 1917 to Charley B. and Lorena B. Spong Johnson. He died Dec. 12, 1994 and is buried in South Marion Cemetery, Stratford, IA.
Pvt. Johnson served with the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II with the Signal Division in the European Theater.
