The cost of war runs high!

Word of the victory in Europe today brought a feeling of happiness and relief to thousands of families in the Muscatine area, but for others there were only sad memories.  And for those who have sons, husbands, brothers or other relatives, fighting against the Japs in the second phase of the big world-wide conflagration the period of rejoicing was less pronounced.

Paul Roy Hansen, 22, nephew of Criss Hansen of Nichols, officiating declared death a year following the report that he was missing in action Sept. 5, 1943, while on the U.S.S. Little, sunk by the enemy off Guadalcanal.

Paul Roy Hansen was born July 13, 1920 to Fred and Mary Permelia Hafner Hansen. He died Sept. 5, 1942 (lost at sea) and has a cenotaph in Nichols Cemetery, Nichols, IA and is memorialized at the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
