Sgt. T/4 Herbert James Halleland Jr.

 

 

Herbert James ‘Herb’ Halleland, Jr. was born Nov. 27, 1926 to Herbert Julius and Lillian Skeie Halleland. He died Dec. 11, 2016 and is buried in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Randall, IA.

Herb served with the U.S. Army in World War II in the 3010th Division.

Herbert James Halleland, Jr. was born November 27, 1926 to Herbert and Lillian (Skeie) Halleland in rural Hamilton County, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at Elim Lutheran Church in Randall. Herb graduated from Randall Consolidated School and shortly after graduation was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Italy from 1945 to 1947. He earned the rank of T/4 Sergeant in the 3010th Division.

On August 7, 1949, Herbert married Betty June Reese at the Federated Church in Jewell, Iowa. Herb and Betty lived in Randall where Herb worked in the family business, Randall Lumber Company. Three children, Janet, Keith and Joan were born while the family lived in Randall.

In 1961, Randall Lumber Company purchased the lumberyard in Blairsburg, Iowa. Herb became the manager and commuted from Randall until the fall of 1963 when the family moved to Blairsburg. Herb was President of Randall Lumber Company, with lumberyards in Randall, Blairsburg and Nevada and was a founding shareholder in Story City Building Products.

Herb and his family became associate members of the United Church of Christ, Congregational in Blairsburg. Herb was an active member of the church and of the community. He served in many capacities of the church, was charter president of the Blairsburg Lions Club, was a member of the Blairsburg Opera House Restoration Committee, the Northwestern Lumber Association, and longtime member of the Williams American Legion Post #633.

Herb enjoyed spending time at the family cabin at Lake Jefferson, Minnesota, and later at Spirit Lake, Iowa. He enjoyed fishing, boating, bird watching, and all of God’s creation.

Herb loved his work and continued at the Blairsburg lumberyard until Alzheimer’s Disease forced his retirement in 2010. Since 2012, he had lived at Bethany Life in Story City under the loving care of the excellent staff. Herb passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 11 at Bethany Life at 90 years of age.

Herb is survived by his wife, Betty Halleland; his son, Keith Halleland; his daughters, Janet (John) Lovell and Joan Kitten (Ken Ambrose); his grandchildren, Travis (Corrie), Maura Klein, Emily Klein, Claire Halleland, Paige Halleland, Reese Kitten and Cole Kitten; his great-grandchildren, Eliana Laws and Foster Klein; his sister, Ruth Gabrielson; his brother, John (Nancy) Halleland; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Lillian; his sister, June Brekken; and his brothers-in-law, Burdell Brekken and William Gabrielson.

Herb was a caring and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Services were held December 14, 2016 at United Church of Christ, Congregational in Blairsburg.
