Stratford Man Killed in Ship Explosion
Mrs. F. L. Greeley has just learned of the death of Robert Guthrie, machinist mate, first class, who lost his life in the explosion of the ammunition ship, Mount Hood, Nov 10. This was the same ship on which Newton Williams, of Lehigh also lost his life.
Guthrie whose home was in Des Moines, was born and reared in Stratford. Mrs. Guthrie, the former Zola Rodine, also a native of Stratford, is a niece of Mrs. Greeley. The Mount Hood blew up at an advanced base in the Pacific. Guthrie was a veteran of World War I.

Robert Custer Guthrie was born Aug. 18, 1896 to Robert W. and Mary M. Smith Guthrie. He died Nov. 10, 1944, and is memorialized at the Manila American Cemetery, Fort Bonifacio, Manila, Philippines.
He was first listed as missing in action in the explosion of the ammunition ship, Mount Hood. He was later declared killed in action.
