Verdis Fortune, 77, Williams, a former Blairsburg farmer, died Jan. 29, 1993 at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with the Rev. Mark Buchhop and Vicar Peter Utecht officiating. Burial is in Graceland Cemetery. Graveside military services will be conducted by American Legion Post No. 191. Visitation is until 8 a.m. Tuesday at the Foster Funeral Home.
Verdis LeRoy Fortune, son of Frank and Tressa (McFarland) Fortune, was born Nov. 22, 1915 on a farm northwest of Stanhope, He attended Stanhope school. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army Demolition in Washington State.
On Oct. 15, 1950, he married Veronica Kochish at Fort Dodge. The couple farmer in the Hamilton County area retiring to Williams in 1981.
He is survived by his wife, Veronica; daughters, Mary Zorn of Williams and Ginny Austin of Des Moines; sons, Ronald Fortune of Webster City and Don Fortune of San Antonio, Texas; grandchildren, Jennifer, Mindy and Jeffrey Fortune and Cory Zorn; and two nieces. He was preceded in death by one son in infancy, a granddaughter, his parents and sister, Veda Davis.
He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, American Legion Post No. 191 and the Disabled Veterans of Fort Dodge.
