Walter Leland Eckerman was born Aug. 5, 1919 to Clarence Ray and Agnes Irene Ackerman. He died Aug. 24, 1943 and is buried in Chariton Cemetery, Chariton, IA.
Lt. Eckerman served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps and was one of twelve airmen killed when his B-17F Flying Fortress #24-6062 crashed near Sand Springs, Montana.
