Pvt. John De Vries, son of Mr. and Mrs. P. E. De Vries arrived home from Fort Knox, Kentucky on Thursday evening to spend a nine day furlough at the parental P. E. De Vries home. He will then report at Fort Ord, California, from where he expects to leave for service in the South Pacific.

ON FURLOUGH
Pvt. John De Vries, son of Mr. and Mrs. P. E. De Vries arrived home on his first (and last before he leaves the states) furlough having completed his training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. John entered the service in January of this year. He said he greatly enjoyed the News, and found that through it he was able to keep well informed on his friends in the service elsewhere as well as other home town events that interested him.

Wilmina De Vries, who is employed at Grand Rapids, Michigan, is enjoying a week’s visit at the parental P. E. De Vries home while her brother, Pvt. John De Vries is home on furlough from Fort Knox, Kentucky.

WAS IN ATOM BOMB AREA
John De Vries, son of Mr. and Mrs. P. E. De Vries, writes that he was recently in Hiroshima where the atom bomb first proved itself and he was able to judge for himself the extent of the destruction which he said was hard to believe without actually viewing it first-hand.

Sunday visitors at the P.E. De Vries home included Mr. and Mrs. Ed De Groot and children of Edgerton, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. John De Beer and family of Carnes, and the William Huisman and Clarence Jonker families of Orange City. They all came home that day to see their brother John De Vries who had arrived home from overseas service in Japan on Saturday afternoon.

John H. De Vries, SN 37783090, was born Oct. 1, 1912 in Orange City, Iowa, and lived at Box 266, Sioux Center, Iowa prior to entering the army on Jan. 5, 1945 at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. He departed for foreign service on Aug. 11, 1945 and returned on Sept. 11, 1946. He served with the 41st Division; 1874th Aviation Eng.; and Co. B, 240th Eng. while in service, and was discharged on Nov. 2, 1946.
