John Henry Bode was born July 6, 1923 to Richard C. “Dick” and Lena Ida Voss Bode. He died Apr. 20, 1944 and is memorialized at the North Africa American Cemetery and Memorial in Carthage, Tunisia and also has a cenotaph in Memorial Park Cemetery, Austinville, IA.
Cpl. Bode served with the U.S. Army Air Corps 32nd Photo Recon Squadron, 5th Reconnaissance Group. in World War II and was MIA/KIA in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Algiers while aboard the SS Paul Hamilton serving as part of convoy UGS 38, carrying supplies and the ground personnel of the 485th Bombardment Group. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
