Return Bodies of 2 Local Soldiers

Troth, Dixon Both Killed in Italy

Bodies of two Council Bluffs soldiers, both killed in Italy, are among eight southwest Iowans being returned to the United States aboard the army transport Carroll Victory.

The local men are Pvt. Russell E. Troth, 21, son of Mrs. Jennie Donahue, 2642 Fourth ave., and S/Sgt. Gene W. Dixon, 28, grandson of Mrs. M. E. Dixon, 250 West Washington ave.

Pvt. Troth, who was graduated from Thomas Jefferson high school in 1942, was killed in Italy on Feb. 14, 1944. Surviving are his mother and step-father; two sisters, Mrs. Murldean Austin of Independence, Mo., and Mrs. Lorene Mattox of Council Bluffs, and a brother, Robert Troth, at home. Cutler’s funeral home will be in charge of funeral arrangements when the body is returned here.

Pvt. Russell Edwin Troth was born Mar. 21, 1923 to Andrew Pearl and Jennie Bates Troth. He died Feb. 14, 1944 and is buried in Walnut Hill Cemetery, Council Bluff, IA.
