Local Youths in Marcus Battle
Proof that the local boys are “really in the thick of it,” comes from the homes of Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Lette, 1634 Fourth avenue; and Mr. and Mrs. Isaacson, 250 West Broadway; whose sons participated in the battle of Marcus island on Aug. 31.
The last direct word from the boys was in September. The Leetes received a letter from their son, Jack Thompson, gunner; and or near the same date, the Isaacsons received work from their son, J. J. Isaacson MM 2/c. Each boy mentioned the Marcus battle.
Isaacson is a graduate of Thomas Jefferson high school and attended college at Iowa City for one year.
Thompson attended Thomas Jefferson, but enlisted before graduating. He received basic training at the Great Lakes naval training station.
Both were employed at the Union Pacific railroad previous to their enlistment.
The Leetes have in their possession a Hawaiian newspaper clipping sent by their son Jack. The clipping gives a full account of the Marcus battle.
