NEWS About MEN AND WOMEN IN SERVICE

C. S. Steele, C. C. S., was a member of the crew of the Roe, that on last Christmas eve, sank a Japanese trawler in the waters off Iwo Jima.  One the dame day, this little fighting ship sank an enemy destroyer escort vessel after a chase almost to the home harbor.  This delayed news has been revealed since the taking of a Jap-held island by the United States forces.  Steele, a chief commissary steward, is the son of Mrs. H. L. Layton, 498 Eighteenth street, Marion.  He has been in service since 1927.
