Rock Valley Youth Killed In Action In Italy, December 7th

Rock Valley (Special) - Word was received here Thursday that Donald E. Johnson, PFC, had been killed in action in Italy. Donald was a cook and it was his duty to carry food to the front where it is supposed he was killed on December 7. Donald, a cousin of Emory Suter worked for the Suter family for over a year and was well known here and had made many friends who were saddened to hear the report.

He was the first man to register for conscription in Sioux County and was among the second group of selectees to be called for service. He was at Fort Snelling for some time before being sent to Camp Claibourne, LA, and then to New York where he sailed for overseas landing in Ireland. He landed with the troops in Africa on November 8, 1941, and served with the troops in Sicily and then in Italy. He was a member of the 34th Division. Donald wrote very many interesting letters and corresponded with several people around town.
