HOUGH REPORTED MISSING IN ACTION

Cpl. Robert L. Hough has been reported missing in action in France according to a war department announcement received by his sister, Mrs. Charles D. Shepard, 1104 Sixth avenue Tuesday.

On Saturday, Aug. 19 his mother, Mrs. Fred Jewel of Crescent, received a letter dated Aug. 2 in which Cpl. Hough enclosed a citation revealing that he had been awarded the Bronze Star for heroic achievement in Normandy.

The citation also revealed that the same award had been given to Capt. Kennard W. Gardiner for services in Normandy at the same time. Capt. Gardiner is also from Council Bluffs.

Cpl. Hough has been overseas since January 1944 and has been in the army since Jan. 1941.

MISSING

Cpl. Robert L. Hough has been reported missing in action since Aug. 4, according to an announcement received from the war department this week by his sister, Mrs. Charles D. Shepard, 1104 Sixth avenue. Cpl. Hough is the son of Mrs. Fred Jewel of Crescent.

WINS BRONZE STAR

Cpl. Robert L. Hough, son of Mrs. Bessie Jewel of Crescent, was recently awarded the bronze star medal for heroic achievement in Normandy, France, according to work received recently here. Wounded Aug. 1 near St. Lo, he was taken prisoner by the Germans but was later liberated from a hospital in Paris by American troops. Cpl. Hough is now recovering at the O’Rielly general hospital in Springfield, Mo.

AWARDED PURPLE HEART

Cpl. Robert L. Hough of the cavalry has been awarded the purple heart at O’Reilly General hospital, Springfield, Mo., for wounds received in combat near St. Lo, France. After he was hit by a bullet in the back, he and two other American soldiers were taken prisoners by the Germans. “All the time I was a prisoner of the Germans, I was treated very well,” Cpl. Hough states. He was liberated in a Paris hospital when the allies moved in. He is the son of Mrs. Bessie Jewel of Crescent. His sister, Mrs. Charles E. Sheppard, resides at 1104 Sixth avenue.

A picnic will be held at Dodge park July 1 to honor Cpl. Robert Hough who is home from O’Rielly general hospital, Springfield, Mo. Friends and relatives are invited.

City Council News – gave the go-ahead on a 225-foot sewer main to serve the area of Little Broadway and Norton avenue. Action followed the appeal of Robert Hough, 1540 North Broadway, a paralyzed veteran of world war II. He plans to build near the intersection.
