WAR SERVICE NEWS.

Mr. and Mrs. T. F. Hoffmann of Merrill have received word from their son, Pfc. George Hoffmann, that he is now in Australia. He wrote, “It’s suppose to be winter down here,” but the letter indicated that it wasn’t very cold.

George Hoffmann, Cpl. has been on New Guinea 8 months repairing caterpillar tractors and trucks. George’s speciality is Diesel motors. He dislikes the heat and the lack of sufficient good food. It sometimes gets so cool at night that they use two blankets. It rains nearly every night. He has never had malaria.

George J. Hoffmann was born Nov. 8, 1921 to Theodore and Elizabeth A. Wiltgen Hoffmann. He died Apr. 4, 2008 and is buried in Saint Joseph Cemetery, Johnson Township, Plymouth County, IA.

Sgt. Hoffmann served with the U.S. Army Headquarters Division, 1881st, stationed in the Philippines, New Guinea and Leyte.
