John Hayes, Also of Charles City, Is Reported Missing

CHARLES CITY – John Hayes, 28, son of Mrs. Blanche Hayes of Charles City, was reported missing in action, his mother was notified by the navy department. Hayes was on the U. S. S. Arizona which was bombed and sunk by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor Dec. 7.

John Doran Hayes was born Dec. 3, 1913 to Cleveland and Blanche Doran Hayes. He died Dec. 7, 1971 and is memorialized at the Courts of the Missing, Court 3, Honolulu Memorial, Honolulu, Hawaii and at the USS Arizona Memorial, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Petty Officer Hayes served in World War II aboard the USS Arizona (BB-39) and was MIA/KIA when that vessel was attacked while in Pearl Harbor. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
