Lt. William R. Haines

 

TAKES PILOT TRAINING

William Haines, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Haines, 1822 W. 15th street, has been selected for training in the Army air force at Randolph field, Texas, according to word received by Mr. and Mrs. Haines from Maj. Gen. H. R. Harmon, at Randolph field.

Lieut. William R. Haines, recently reported as missing in action over Germany July 21, is a prisoner of war, according to word received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis J. Haines, 1822 W. 15th street, Thursday.  Notification was through the channels of the International Red Cross.  His father is a member of The Journal-Tribune daytime composing room force.

Leading navigator on a Liberator bomber, the young lieutenant is in a German prison camp, the report stated.  A letter disclosing details is expected from the provost marshal.

Lieut. Haines received his commission at Mather field, Cal., and was sent overseas in December.  He participated in action in north Africa, Italy and European theaters of war.

Lt. William R. Haines, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis J. Haines, 1822 W. 15th street, has been honorably discharged from the Army air forces at Santa Ana, Cal.  Lt. Haines, a navigator on a B-24, is a veteran of 43 months service and wears the distinguished fliers cross with one oak leaf cluster, the air medal with three oak leaf clusters and four campaign stars.  He served in Italy and England.  Before entering the service, Lt. Haines was employed by the Cudahy Packing company as a buyer.
