LT. CARROLL R. DEAN IS KILLED
Former North Junior Pupil Was Fighting in Philippines
Lt. (j.g.) Carroll Rex Dean, 21, was killed in action in the Philippines on January 21, Sioux City relatives have learned from his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. Gail Dean of Spokane, Wash. , former residents here. Lt. Dean was born in Sioux City. He attended Everett and North junior schools, later was graduated from a Spokane high school.
Taking naval training in California, Washington, Florida and Texas, he received his wings in June, 1943, and was promoted to the present rating while on duty in the Philippines. He is survived by his parents and one brother, Vernon G. Dean, seaman first class, now stationed at Treasure Island, Cal. He has many relatives in Sioux City and Spokane.

Carroll Rex Dean was born June 6, 1023 to Charles Gail and Hazel G. McCuddin Dean. He died Jan. 21, 1945 (at sea) and is memorialized at the Walls of the Missing Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines.
He was a pilot of a torpedo bomber aboard the carrier USS Hancock (CV-19). He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with 2 Gold Stars.
