S. Sgt Robert L. Davin, whose wife lives at 507 W. 27th street, has been commended for heroic service in action with the Fifth Army in Italy. Sgt. Davin and several other men formed a platoon of litter bearers servicing the special service forces. “Their bravery under fire was an inspiration to those under their control and their fine loyalty to duty and initiative in meeting new situations reflects the highest credit upon themselves, their unit and the medical detachment,” the citation said.

S. Sgt. Robert L. Davin, through outstanding performance in actual combat, has received a temporary combat appointment and promotion to second lieutenant, effective October 10, 1944. A son of Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Davin, 1407 Lunah Avenue, Lt. Davin has been serving with a medical corps in Italy for 20 months. He formerly was employed by the classified department of The Journal- Tribune. His wife, who resides in Long Beach, California is in Sioux City on a visit.

Sioux City Gets Promotion, Medal for Work in Italy
Lt. Robert (“Bob”) Davin, commissioned on the field as a second lieutenant for outstanding service in the line of duty, has been promoted to first lieutenant.
For meritorious service in combat in Italy, Lt. Davin, formerly employed in the want ad department of Journal-Tribune publications, has been awarded the bronze star.
The citation reads: During the drive Lt. Davin (then technician third grade) was in charge of a group of litter bearers servicing the special service force. His splendid organization and careful selection of litter routes effected a prompt and efficient evacuation of the wounded. His bravery and action under fire was an inspiration to those under his control.
In addition to the bronze star, Lt. Davin, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Davin, 1407 Luna Street, wears the good conduct medal, the north African and European theater ribbons with five battle stars and an arrowhead invasion star, and the combat medical badge.
His wife, who is living in Long Beach, California, said that the former Sioux Cityan is expected home soon to receive a discharge after 30 months overseas. Accredited with 98 points, he enlisted in the army in August 1942.

Robert Lloyd Davin was born June 11, 1921 to Armin C. and Mabel Hendrickson Davin. He died Jan. 3, 2015 and is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City, IA.
