Ernest F. Carpenter, boatswain's mate second class, son of Mrs. Dagnor Carpenter, 815 W. Fifth street, was recently awarded the purple heart for wounds received in action against the Japanese. He has seen action in Attu, in Normandy, southern France, Iwo Jima and various other Pacific campaigns. His wife lives in Chelsea, Mass.
