Walnut Youth Writes to Mother

WALNUT – S. Sgt. Edward C. Burlingham, prisoner in a German war camp, revealed in a letter to his mother, Mrs. Beth Burlingham, that his right foot was so injured by flak that amputation was necessary and a bullet went through his left foot.

Written Nov. 7, 1942, the letter is the first from her son since he was taken prisoner, following a bombing raid Oct. 10, 1942, over Germany. He is being held in the prison camp at Stalg, Germany.

Sgt. Burlingham wrote that he was doing nicely and for his mother not to worry as he was thinking of the apple pies he would eat when he returned to the states.

He is the holder of the air medal and oak leaf cluster.
