CHARLES CITY – Frank D. Borchers, 33, a mechanic in the United States air corps in the Philippine Islands, was killed in action, his father, D. H. Borchers, was notified by the war department Sunday night. It was the first Floyd county casualty of World War II.
Borchers, whose rank was that of a private first class, attended the Charles City schools. No details of his death were disclosed by the war department.
His father is the only survivor.

Frank D. Borchers was born Nov. 11, 1908 to Dirk H. and Eda G. Harnack Borchers. He died Dec. 8, 1941 and is memorialized at the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines.
Pvt. Borchers served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps and was KIA on duty at Clark Field, Philippine Islands. He was awarded the Air Medal and Purple Heart.
