Richard A. Abbe was born July 26, 1921 to John A. and Mary Elizabeth Earhart Abbe. He died Dec. 2, 1943 and is buried in Zachary Taylor National Cemetery, Louisville, KY.
Lt. Abbe served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps 448th Bomb Squadron, 321st Bomb Group, Medium and was MIA/FOD/KIA on a mission in central Italy. A direct hit was scored on his plane, setting it afire. During his tour of 29 missions, he received the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters. He was a superior lead navigator, leading some of the most difficult missions over heavily defended targets in Central Italy and the Balkans and also was an excellent officer.
