Raphael E. “Ray” Murphy was born Nov. 17, 1920 to Steven Arthur and Ellen Agnes McLaughlin Murphy. He died July 30, 1944 and has a cenotaph in Zion Cemetery, Fonda, IA.

Pvt. Murphy served in World War II with the U.S. Army 33rd Armored Regiment, 3rd Armored Division and was KIA in the Battle of the Bulge. The Legion Post in Fonda, IA is named after Ray as he was the first one killed in service from the Fonda community.

James Burton Murray was born Dec. 18, 1919 to Shelby Monroe and Gertrude Armentia Sherfey Murray. He died Apr. 24, 1945 and is buried in Florence American Cemetery, Impruneta, Italy.

Pvt. Murray served in World War II with the U.S. Army 133rd Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division and was KIA in Italy and awarded the Purple Heart.
