Francis George Raker was born June 10, 1921 to George and Philomena “Minnie” Meyer Raker. He died Mar. 11, 1945 and is buried in Calvary Cemetery, Cresco, IA. He was initially buried in the Fourth Marine Division Cemetery, Iwo Jima.
Petty Officer Raker served in World War II with the U.S. Navy and was KIA while serving as a Pharmacists Mate with the U.S. Marines 4th Marine Division on Iwo Jima. He was serving with the front lines assisting in caring for the wounded and evacuating them to the rear when he was struck by a sniper’s bullet.
