Verne Lawrence Debes was born Sept. 17, 1910 to James Lawrence and Mae Zella Pugh Debes. He died Nov. 18, 1995 and is buried in Mederville Cemetery, Elkader, IA.

Sgt. Debes served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps 2nd Observation Squadron, Nickols Field, Rizel, Philippine Islands where he lost an arm on Dec. 9, 1941, in a bombing attack. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

Irwin J. Degnan was born Feb. 12, 1919 to John and Anna Josephine Nigg Degnan. He died Aug. 20, 2015 and is buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Guttenberg, IA.

Lt. Degnan served in World War II with the U.S. Army 34th Division and was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action on D-Day in the invasion of France.

Charles William Doerring was born Jan. 22, 1921 to Eddie August and Irene S. Brandtman Doerring. He died June 8, 1947 and is buried in Postville Cemetery, Clayton County, IA.

Sgt. Doerring served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps as an aerial gunner on a bomber in the Italian war theatre. He was shot down and spent 13 months as a POW.

John Peter Dorweiler was born Sept. 1, 1926 to John and Mary A. Eggerth Dorweiler. He died Mar. 17, 2002 and is buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Guttenberg, IA.

Petty Officer Dorweiler served in World War II with the U.S. Navy Medical Corps.

Donald William Downey was born Feb. 20, 1924 to Donald Harley “Harley” and Elsa Anna Schmack Downey. He died Feb. 19, 1945 and is buried in Saint Josephs Cemetery, Elkader, IA.

Pvt. Downey served in World War II with the U.S. Marine Corps 28th Regiment, 5th Division and was KIA in the Battle of Iwo Jima.

Leonard Francis Duster was born Dec. 22, 1914 to Paul J. and Margaret Schmitt Duster. He died May 5, 1991 and is buried in Saint Francis of Assisi Cemetery, Balltown, IA.

Sgt. Duster served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps with a bomber crew that raided Jap-held Wake Island. He was awarded the Air Medal and two Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters.
