John Farnsworth Smoller was born Aug. 21, 1912 to John B. and Louisa Carrell Stevenson Smoller. He died Mar. 5, 1970 and is buried in the United States Military Academy Post Cemetery, West Point, NY.
Gen. Smoller served in World War II with the U.S. Army. He was Executive Officer and Acting Commanding Officer with the 13th Armored Division Artillery and served with the Battalion and division throughout training and later in combat in France, Germany and Austria. After world War II, he was assigned to West Point. He was next assigned to the District of Columbia and the Strategic Intelligence School. He also served at the Pentagon and in 1961 became Commanding General, 8th Division Artillery in Baumholder, Germany and moved on to Stuttgart as Commanding General, Seventh Army Artillery. He returned to the U.S. and the II Corps as a Major General before his retirement. His decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star and Army Commendation Medal.
