Capt. Penkhus served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps flying 68 strategic and tactical bombing missions as a B-25 First Pilot, in both the European and China-Burma-India war theaters. He became Operations Officer and squadron leader. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with six oak leaf clusters. He returned to California to be an Operations Officer and flight instructor.

Petty Officer Pevestorf served in World War II with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Chicago (CA-29) when that vessel was bombed and sank in the Battle of Rennell Island. He was MIA/FOD/KIA and awarded the Purple Heart.
