Joseph Herman “Joe" Koenig was born Aug. 14, 1922 to Joseph and Frances Koenig. He died Feb. 3, 2016 and is buried in Cedar Memorial Park, Cedar Rapids, IA.
Joe served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps. His B-17 bomber was shot down off the coast of France on his first combat mission and he became a German POW for 14 months. He was one of the POWs moved to multiple prison camps, enduring the grueling German “Long March”, a 52 day 500 mile march across Germany in the middle of a severe winter, often sleeping at night on the snow with one blanket. Numerous men died on this forced march. He was awarded many medals including the Prisoner of War Medal and the Purple Heart.
