Dean Willis Gilliatt was born Dec. 6, 1920 to Ernest E. and Hazel C. Urmy Gilliatt. He died June 19, 1944 and is memorialized at the Courts of the Missing, Court 3, Honolulu Memorial, Honolulu, Hawaii and in Garrison Cemetery, Garrison, IA.
Lt. Gilliatt served in World War II with the Naval Air Corps and was KIA off the coast of Saipan during the Pacific campaign. He served aboard the USS Gambier Bay (CVE-73) as a naval aviator, flying a Wildcat fighter plane. He died in an airplane crash which occurred during flight operations from this ship and his body was never recovered. He was awarded the Air Medal with Gold Star.
