Ronald Eugene Mason was born Jan. 20, 1919 to Floyd Griffin and Nelle Fern Eatinger Mason. He died July 17, 2021 and is buried in Iowa Veterans Cemetery, Adel, IA.

Ronald served in World War II with the U.S. Navy as a “Fly Boy”, joining the only Naval Squadron intercepting German ships and submarines going to and from the Mediterranean through the Straits of Gibraltar. After a year he returned stateside to an air base on Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay where he tested planes, flying them until they broke dow to see how long various parts would last. After hostilities ended, the Navy assigned him to Puerto Rico and Newfoundland before he mustered out as LtCdr.

To celebrate his 100th year, he parachuted out of an airplane for the first time, a story that landed on Page One of the Des Moines Register.
