The 9,800 “top cream” veterans of World War II were selected by the war department from an original list of 108,00 applicants, all of whom held temporary commission in the wartime citizen army.

To Senate for OK.

The nominations, which went to the senate for confirmation, will bring the officer corps of the regular army to its authorized strength of 25,000. The war department said it employed a new screening process in the selections designed to find “the best leaders in the world today.”

Off the successful appointees, abut 4,100 will be commissioned in the air forces, 3,100 in the ground forces and 2,600 in the service forces. About a third of those on the list have already been returned to civilian life. They will be called back to active duty in 15 days. Those still in service will continue at their temporary rank until reduced under normal procedure.
