Danbury, Iowa—Private John Kane, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Kane, has been given a medical discharge from the army due to a chronic case of asthma.
Danbury, Iowa—Private First Class John Fleischmann, jeep driver with the Wildcat division, is now stationed in Arizona. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Fleischmann, Sr.
Danbury, Iowa-- Technical Sergeant Wayne Seuntjens of Palm Springs, California is hoe on a furlough visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Seuntjens.
Kingsley, Iowa—Leonard Lyle Davis, second class seaman, is spending a 15-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Perry Davis. He is stationed at Farragut, Idaho and expects to be transferred upon his return.
Oto, Iowa—Private Charles W. Benton has been transferred from Camp Callan, California, to Montana State College to undergo training in engineering under the army specialized training program.

Sanborn, Iowa – Sergeant Earl Epping of the Marine Corps writes his parents Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Epping, that he is feeing mush better and has been released from the base hospital at San Diego, California. He has been suffering from malaria contracted at Guadalcanal.

Sanborn, Iowa – Private Martin Kroese, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Kroese, has received a medical discharge from the army. He was stationed with a searchlight division at Balboa Park, San Diego, California.
Spencer, Iowa—Memorial services were held at the Baptist church for Elmer Peterson, former Spencer garage man who was reported killed as the result of a submarine action against a United States ship in the Atlantic.
Spencer, Iowa—Seaman First Class Robert Carver of the coast guard sang recently in a Los Angeles night club where Freddie Martin’s band was broadcasting. Carver was invited to sing as a serviceman guest.

Spirit Lake, Iowa—Lloyd Schuneman, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.A. Schuneman of Spirit Lake, left for Norfolf, Virginia to visit with his wife. He is on furlough from the parachute troop base at Alliance, Nebraska. Schuneman recently set the type for an anniversary edition of Wings and Boots, the official parachute trooper publication. In so doing he sacrificed “two jumps” but received the commendation of his entire paratroop outfit. He is the only Dickinson County youth in the paratroops. Before leaving for the army he was a linotype operator on the Spirit Lake Beacon.
Estherville, Iowa – First Lieut. William N. Deming of the marine air force writes relatives here that he has recently been transferred from a base in the Pacific to another one. “This base is the prettiest one so far, the kind of south sea island pictured in travel folders, but I’d rather see one acre of Iowa corn than all the palm trees you could pack in a section of land,” he said.
Estherville, Iowa – Francis C. Martinson, stationed at Norfolk, Virginia, visited last week in the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Martinson.
Estherville, Iowa – Lieut. Col. Homer Munson, son of Mr. and Mrs. E.M. Munson of Estherville, arrived here by plane from Washington.
Akron, Iowa – Private first Class Gerhard Moller returned recently to Eustis, Florida after spending a furlough here.
Cushing, Iowa – Lieut. Robert Ohme has returned to Camp Howze, Texas. He and his wife spent a few days here at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer H. Ohme.
Cushing, Iowa – Russell Pruehs, son of Mr. and Mrs. Julius J. Pruehs of Cushing, has been promoted to sergeant at Memphis, Tenn., where he is a member of a ferrying group.
Cushing, Iowa – LeRoy Yapp, carpenter’s mate, second class, has returned to the east coast after spending a 10-day leave with his daughter, Le Donna Yapp, at Correctionville and with hius brother, Clarence Yapp, here.
Cushing, Iowa – Capt. Grant Bullock of Camp Beauregard, Louisiana and Mrs. Bullock and their children, Danny and Marcia, who are residing temporarily at Alexandria, La., are spending the captain’s leave here with his parents, Dr. and Mrs. A. H. Bullock and other relatives.

Sanborn, Iowa – Lieut. James Grogan, from the army air base at New Orleans, Louisiana, is spending a 10-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Grogan.
Peterson, Iowa – Cecil Gaskins, son of J.D. Gaskins, who has been in the army for one year, has returned home, having received an honorable discharge.

Wall Lake, Iowa – Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Morley Saturday received a card from their son Hubert, who is a prisoner of the Japanese, through the international Red Cross.
Spencer, Iowa – The first communication from Private Richard L. Hanson of Spencer since Corregidor fell in the early spring of 1942 has been received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Hanson. The card was dated December 22, and the youth said he was in Japan, alive and well.
Moville, Iowa – Staff Sergeant George Wilkinson returned to Camp Dix, New Jersey after spending a furlough here with his mother, Mrs. Berniece Wilkinson.
Moville, Iowa – Ray Rounds has entered naval training in the naval training center at Farragut, Idaho.
Onawa, Iowa – Paul E. Drager, shipfitter third class, was home on leave. He has been on north Pacific duty for the last nine months.

Linn Grove, Iowa—Corporal Robert Peterson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Peterson of Linn Grove, can’t say number 13 is an unlucky one for him. Peterson, who is one of two paratroopers from Clay County, made his 13th jump on July 13 from plane 13. He was the 13th man out and landed near highway 13.
Milford, Iowa – Thomas J. Rush, formerly of Milford, is to be graduated Saturday from the chaplain school at Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass., and immediately assigned to service.
Audubon, Iowa – With a class of 437 chaplains to be graduated Saturday at Harvard university, Cambridge, Mass., is Paul E. Parker, former resident here. He is to receive immediate assignment to active duty with the armed forces.
Cushing, Iowa – Maj. Harvey J. Gunderson has returned to Washington after he and his wife visited here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Lage.
Cushing, Iowa – F. Volkert, aviation machinist’s mate second class, Seattle, is spending a one-week leave at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Volkert, while recovering from an operation.

Hoeck, 1202 18th Street, Richard J. Rensch, 1815 Douglas Street, Edward J. Smith Jr., 2037 S. Cleveland Street and Donald J. Ward, 4020 ½ Van Buren Street, have entered preflight pilot training at the San Antonio, Texas, aviation cadet center.
Cadet Carl W. Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl A. Anderson, 813 Main Street, is a member of the engineer corps stationed at Kansas State College, Manhattan, Kansas. A Central High School graduate, he was a machine operator before entering the service.
Private John K. McNally, son of Mrs. Anna L. McNally, 313 Sioux Street, has begun basic training at the army air force mechanics school at Gulfport field, Mississippi. After completing his training at Gulport field, Private McNally will be eligible to attend a specialist school.
Aviation Cadet Robert E. Hine, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hayden Hine, 1505 Ruby Street, recently reported for training in the army air force basic pilot school at Goodfellow field near San Angelo, Texas after completing his primary flight instruction at Gibbs field, Fort Stockton, Texas. Cadet Hine was graduated in 1939 from Central High School, where he played basketball and later studied at the University of Iowa and Morningside College.
Aviation Cadet William G. Mangold, 26, son of Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Mangold, Los Angeles, will soon graduate from the army’s twin-engine advanced flying school at Pampa, Texas. He is a former resident of Sioux City and attended the University of Iowa.
Ralph Edward Muma Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph E. Muma, 2831 Williams Avenue, has been graduated from the armament department at Lowry field, Colorado. He was graduated from East High School in 1942 and received his basic training at Sheppard field, Texas.
Private Clarence Wyant, son of Mrs. Ben Wyant, 3419 Orleans Avenue, has completed his basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, preparatory to combat duty with an armored unit.

Sioux Rapids, Iowa – John Wayne Reng, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Reng, is an officer candidate at Camp Barkeley, Texas.
Sioux Rapids, Iowa – Lieut. Ralph Wright, son of Mr. and Mrs. Art Wright, saluted his family and friends in Sioux Rapids when he circled the plane he was piloting over town. Lieut. Wright, who is an instructor at Bergstrom field, Austin, Texas, was on a routine cross country flight with a group of five students.
Pierson, Iowa – Corporal Howard Michaelsen of Mitchell field, New York, arrived to spend a 10-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. August Michaelson. He was stationed in Newfoundland for nine months. Merlin Michaelson, a brother, left for Fort Crook, Nebraska, to begin army duties this week.
Alton, Iowa – Two sons of Mrs. Mina Kass of Alton are in service. Warrant Officer Donald Lass is stationed at Camp Rucker, Alabama, James Kass volunteered for navy service and has been stationed at Camp Bennion Farragut, Idaho.
Remsen, Iowa – Private Fillomer Frasch, son of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Frasch, has been transferred from Stanford University to the University of Iowa, where he will be a student of the Italian language under the army specialized training program.
Remsen, Iowa – Corporal Francis Treinen of Fort Riley, Kansas, has been transferred from the 46th general hospital to a casual detachment.

Sanborn, Iowa – Ralph L. DeVoll is among 166 cadets from Iowa who have entered preflight training at the San Antonio, Texas, aviation cadet center.
Terril, Iowa – Bernard L. (Pat) Grow of Terril is alive and in a Japanese prison camp, according to a postcard from him. The youth was known to have been in the Philippine when Pearl Harbor was attacked and had been listing by the government as “missing” in May 1942, after the fall off Bataan and Corregidor.

William E. Jackson, Jr. former science instructor in Sioux City schools was commissioned a second lieutenant on graduation from the aviation meteorology cadets’ course at the army weather school at Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. William E. Jackson, Early, Iowa.
Louis F. Pierce, son of Mrs. Beulal Pierce, 2004 Metropolitan Street, has been promoted to corporal. He is stationed at Camp Polk, Louisiana.
Donald L. Thompson, 5950 Morningside Avenue, has been promoted to corporal at Fort Jackson, South Carolina.
Harry F. Hilts, has been promoted to corporal at Camp Polk, Louisiana. He is the son of Mrs. Edlah Hilts, Salix.
