Private Douglas F. Dean, son of Mr. and Mrs. O.M. Dean, 4226 Polk Street, has been transferred from Camp Kearns, Utah, to Los Angeles where he is attending a clerical and administration supply school. He is in the army air corps.
Private Harry E. Alarie, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Alarie, 110 Isabella Street, has completed his recruit training at the aviation air force school of navigation at Hondo field, Texas. Private Alarie enlisted in the air force here in September.
Staff Sergeant Kenneth W. Coyne, who has been stationed in Alaska, is visiting this week in the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.G. Coyne at Sergeant Bluff.
James P. Flanagan, son of Mr. and Mrs. James T. Flanagan. 1512 W. 17th Street, is a physical instructor at the United States naval training station at Norfolk, Virginia.
Sergeant Isadore Wutkin, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Wutkin, 1406 Myrtle Street, is spending a 15-day furlough here. He is stationed with the medical corps at Fort Lewis, Washington.
Private Dan Levich, who is stationed at Albuquerque, N. M. is spending a two-week furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. M.A. Levich, 1301 Court Street.
Edward M. Connolly, son of Mr. and Mrs. E.J. Connolly, 3336 Nebraska Street, has been graduated from the navy service school at the Ford Motor company plant at Dearborn as a petty officer second class. He has been transferred to San Diego. Three of his brothers also are in the service. Maurice is in the marines and Bill and Robert are in the army. Another, James, a high school pupil, is planning to enlist in the navy.
Private Tolliver Sumner, who has been stationed at the desert maneuver area in California, is home on a 14-day furlough. He is the son of Mrs. H. E. Murphy, 2119 Virginia Street.
Private Thomas E. (TY) Dillon, former night mailing room foreman on The Journal and well known as coach of Journal Golden Gloves boxing teams, now is serving with the infantry at Camp Adair, Oregon. He writes that the army training id strenuous, but that it is a great conditioner. He is in excellent health and has lost 15 pounds.
Private Robert George Closner, son of Mrs. Josephine Schurdevin, 1519 Silver Street, who was inducted into the army three weeks ago, is stationed at Camp Shelby, Mississippi. A brother, Technical Sergeant Arthur Closner is in the coast artillery in Alaska and another brother, Lester, is a third class petty officer in the navy air corps at Pensacola, Florida.
Laverne Knaack, son of William Knaack, Correctionville, Iowa, has been promoted to the rank of Private First Class. He is stationed at Drew field, Tampa, Florida.
Private Norman C. Peterson, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Peterson, 2612 Douglas Street, has been assigned to the army band at Camp Hondo, Texas. He is a former member of Monahan Post band and Sioux City symphony orchestra.
William L. Graham, Jr. who enlisted November 16 in the United States Marine Corps here, is stationed at the Marine Corps barracks in San Diego, his mother, Mrs. W. L. Graham, 1121 McDonald Street, has received word. Private Graham’s father, W. L. Graham, Sr., is serving with the United States army and is stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He served the last war also.
Capt. Darwin Thornton, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Thornton, Carrol Apartments, formerly stationed at Camp Robinson, Arkansas, in a medical training battalion, now is attending officer candidate’s school of the medical corps at Camp Barkley, Abilene, Texas.

Technical Sergeant John Paulsen, son of Mr and Mrs. John Paulsen, 1519 Geneva Street, who has been at home on furlough, returned to his station at the Lockborne air base, Columbus, Ohio.
Private Alvin Ross, stationed at Camp Chaffiee, Arkansas, is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Ross of 3308 Sixth Avenue, on a 10-day furlough.
Private Dan Levich, who is stationed at Albuquerque, N.M., is spending a two-week furlough with his wife at 900 LaPlante Street, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. Levich, 1301 Court Street.
Technical Sergeant Floyd C. Morris was graduated from officers’ training school at Fort Knox, Kentucky following examination for the air corps service, according to word received by his mother, Mrs. Floyd Morris, 1706 Fall Avenue. Sergeant Morris is stationed at Maxwell field, Montgomery, Alabama.
Robert W. Weldon, Jr., 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.W. Weldon, 2026 Palmetto Street, has enlisted as a naval aviation cadet in the naval reserve. He will report to the navy preflight school, St. Mary College, California, when ordered to active duty.
Charles William Miles, Seaman, second class, stationed at Great Lakes naval training station is spending a nine-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Miles, 405 S. Fairmount Street
Private Anthony J. Schumacher, Jr., 4521 Filmore Street, son of Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Schumacher, Sr., of Hawarden is serving with the armed forces in England.
Robert B. Holloway, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs A.A. Holloway, 2315 10th Street, has enlisted as a naval aviation cadet in the naval reserve. When ordered to active duty, he will report to the naval preflight school at St. Mary’s College, California.

William “Bill” W. Meares of Los Angeles, who has been visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.S. Meares, 2024 Pierce Street, and his sister, Mrs. W.A. Schulz, 3001 Valley Drive, left Monday for Camp Livingston, Louisiana, where he is stationed with the infantry.
Private First Class Robert W. Edward, who is stationed at Camp Barkeley, Texas, has returned to his home here because of the illness of his wife, the former Shirley Plummer.
Elmendo J. Rossi, former Morningside college athlete and a 1942 graduate, is stationed at United States Naval medical center, Bethesda, Maryland, where he is a dental technician. Rossi, who played both football and Basketball at Morningside College, is from Iron Mountain, Minnesota.
Robert F. Petitjean is spending a nine-day leave from the Great Lakes naval training station with his mother, Mrs. George Fintzell, 1213 W. Second Street.
Richard Perry Libby, son of Mr. and Mrs. Perry Libby of McCook Lake and Peter Amphler of Sioux City were pictured in Life magazine recently. They were shown working with the navy construction gang in the Guadalcanal area, where Mr. Libby is a manager. He was previously stationed at Pearl Harbor.
Corporal Robert Stoneburg, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Stoneburg of 1819 Ingleside Avenue, has returned to Fort Sam Houston, Texas, after a 14-day furlough here.
Private Clifford H. Harris, a former member of The Journal sports department, now is stationed at Miami Beach, Florida in training with ground personnel of the army air corps.
Apprentice Seaman Robert C. Peasley, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Peasley, 1525 W. Second Street is visiting home on leave after five weeks of training at the Great Lakes Naval training Station.
Sergeant P.H. Umbach, son of Mrs. Ethel Umbach of Anthon, Iowa, has reported to the armored force school communication department at Fort Knox, Kentucky. The school trains thousands of officers and enlisted technicians.
Everett Russell Morton, 20 son of Mrs. Margaret E. Morton, 1212 13th Street and Bernard Pollock, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Pollock, 1222 Villa Avenue, have arrived at the infantry replacement training center at Camp Wolters, Texas, to begin basic training.
Private Chester L. Axthlem, son of Mrs. Erma Petersen, Tott apartments, a member of the United States army air corps, technical school squadron, is attending radio school at Scott field, Illinois.
Private Joe Zook, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Zook, 4700 ½ Correctionville Road, is home on leave from Sloan Field, Midland, Texas, where he is assigned to the army air corps. He returned because of the illness of his wife. Private Zook enlisted in the air corps in Sioux City 30 days ago. He has completed basic training and expects to be assigned to training in air mechanics.
Private George W. Dowling, a recent graduate of a radio operator’s school at Madison, Wisconsin, has been transferred to a technical air base school at Boca Raton field, Florida, to receive advanced training. His wife lived at 1412 Rebecca Street and his mother, Mrs. A.E. Linke, at 2709 S. Cleveland Street.

Private Harry L. Glarum of Fort Lewis, Washington, is spending a 15-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Glarum, 2813 Ridge Avenue. Private Glarum is in the medical corps.
Sergeant Robert DeLaughter, who is stationed in Kansas City, has been called home by the serious illness of his wife in Leeds. He will return home Sunday night.
Private Emil C. Claussen, Jr. son of Mr. and Mrs. Emil C. Claussen, 810 Dubuque Street, has been transferred from Miami Beach, Florida to a mechanic’s school at Amarillo, Texas.
Corporal Louis L. O’Donnell, a son of Mr and Mrs. Thomas B. O’Donnell of Anthon, Iowa was graduated from the army air forces stationed at Soldier’s field, Boston, as a second lieutenant
Glen E. Staley, Sioux City and Ivo H. Schroeder, Alton, Iowa have been promoted to corporal in an air base squadron at Randolph field, Texas. The former 25, is the son of Mrs. Ada Meeker, 305 W. Fourth Street. He enlisted in July, 1941 at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. The latter, 25, is the son of Mrs. Frances Schroeder of Alton. He enlisted at Fort Des Moines last May and is a clerk.
Kenneth M. Luther, 20-years-old son of Mrs Clarence M. Luther, 3111 Morgan Street, has enlisted as a naval aviation cadet in the United States Naval Reserve and been sworn in at the Kansas City Naval Aviation Cadet selection board.
Sherman G. Weigel, a son of Mr. and Mrs. N E. Weigel, formerly of Salix, Iowa has arrived at Scott field, Illinois, where he will receive a course in radio operating and mechanics to prepare him for membership in a fighting bomber crew.
Virgil O. Reuschling, seaman second class, stationed at Great Lakes Naval Training Station, is spending a nine-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred C. Reuschling, 2417 Center Street. He will return to Great Lakes Tuesday.
Sergeant Robert E. Gleeson, serving with an armored division at Camp Beale, California, is here on furlough. He will spend the weekend with his mother in Minneapolis and then return for a few more days at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Sam, 4522 Manor Circle.
Private James F. Legg, son of Mrs. Lula Legg, 413 11th Street and Private Stanley C. Hamel, 115 Main Street, have graduated from the wheeled vehicle department of the armored force school at Fort Knox, Kentucky and have received diplomas as automotive mechanics. They completed a 45-day course in the repair and maintenance of peeps, jeeps, trucks, scout cars and other motor vehicles to receive their diplomas.
Private Reuben Cohen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Cohen, 1619 Jones Street, is home on furlough after completing his basic training in the quartermaster corps at Fort Francis Warren, Wyoming. He will report to Fort Belvoir, Virginia for training in the engineer’s officer training school. Returning home with him was his wife, who will remain here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Lindau, 3109 Jennings Street. Private Cohen has two brothers in the service, Sergeant Meyer Cohen in New Guinea and First Lieut. Marvin Cohen at Camp Stewart, Georgia.
Roland L. Ressegieu, 115 Paxton Street, who enlisted as a ship’s cook, third class, has begun his “boot” training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station.

Corporal Robert K. Dahlin has been promoted to the rank of second lieutenant after graduation from the signal corps training school at Fort Moumouth, New Jersey, and has been transferred for additional training at Harvard University. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. A. N. Dahlin, 1317 S. Cornelia Street.
Private John Wingert, who is stationed at Camp Bowie, Texas, is home on a 12-day furlough. His wife resides at 226 ½ Helen Street and his parents also live in Sioux City.
Melvin E. Tadlock, seaman first class, will return Wednesday to a training school for radio technicians after spending a nine-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Emery Tadlock, 2516 Ridge Avenue. He recently completed “boot” training at Great Lakes, Illinois.
Thaddaus J. Schoeberl, 1001 Nebraska Street, has begun an intensive course in aviation mechanics at the army air force technical school at Amarillo field, Texas.
Richard Wagstaff, petty officer third class, who now is serving on a United States battleship, has sent four war bonds as Christmas presents for members of his family here. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Wagstaff, 1912 S. Cecelia Street, received two of the bonds; his brother, Robert, one and his sister, Bonnie May another.
Corporal Ivan Seward is visiting his wife at their home, 205 Rebecca Street, while on an 11-day furlough from Camp Edwards, Massachusetts. He will leave next Thursday.
Corporal C. R. Trulock, stationed at Camp Rucker, Alabama, is spending a furlough visiting his wife and son and parents at 2803 Summit Street.
Private Walter L. Clyde, son of Mrs. Grace Warrington, 604 W. Third Street, has arrived at Camp Shelby, Mississippi. He is in the medical corps.
Second Lieut. Stanley H. Herzoff, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. B. Herzoff, 1515 Court Street, who was commissioned at the officer’s candidate department, eastern signal corps school at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, November 30, is home on a 10-day leave. He will report, after his leave, to the officer’s training school, signal depot at Dayton, Ohio.
Staff Sergeant George Shindler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Shindler, 1724 Hamilton Street, is somewhere in North Africa near Oran. His parents received a letter stating “conditions are surprisingly modern and comfortable.” He is with the engineer amphibian brigade.
Private Walter A. Whitney, first class, a member of the Marine Corps, has arrived overseas. Formerly stationed at Camp Elliott, California, he is a son of Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Antrup of Hornick, Iowa. He enlisted February 23, 1941.
Private Robert J. Carlson, who has been stationed with a troop carrier squadron of the army air force in North Carolina, is spending a furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Carlson, 1309 Hill Avenue.
Donald K. Mundt of Sioux City is one of 31 members of the Flying Cornhusker squadron who have completed enlistment and have been sworn in as aviation cadets by the Kansas City cadet selective board. They were recruited by a drive sponsored by the Lincoln, Nebraska, junior chamber of commerce.
Ensign John A. Caylor, son of Mr., and Mrs R. W. Wright, 2319 North View Terrace, is spending a 10-day leave with his parents, after being graduated from the midshipmen’s school at Columbia University in New York City. He will report for duty at Miami, Florida.
Grange W. Huff, United States Navy, has completed his training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station and is spending a leave with his mother, Mrs. Edward Kilker, 1612 Main Street. He has been chosen to attend torpedo-man’s training school upon his return to duty.
Sergeant Oscar Peterson, stationed at Camp Rucker, Alabama, has returned home on a 15-day furlough for a visit with his wife and daughter at 3214 Dace Avenue.
Corporal Donald R. Stodden, son of Dr. F.J Stodden, 4232 Orleans Avenue, has arrived here from Camp Barkeley, Texas, on an eight-day furlough.

First Lieut. George H. Calhoun, son of Mr. and Mrs. George H. Calhoun, 2900 Myrtle Street, is entering a battery officer’s course in the field artillery school at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Lieut. Calhoun reported to Fort Sill from Camp Gruber, Oklahoma.
Private John C. Davis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold A. Davis, 1912 S. Cypress Street and Private Paul H. Tyler, son of Mrs. H. B. Morgan, 1708 S. St. Aubin Street, have been graduated from an intensive course in aviation mechanics at Sheppard field, Texas. They are now eligible to become crew chiefs on bombers.
Sergeant William F. Crowe an aerial engineer stationed with a bombardment squadron at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, was promoted December 1 to the rank of staff sergeant. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Crowe, 315 20th Street.
Private Gene G. Semple, son of Mr. and Mrs George Semple, 705 Whitcher Avenue, has arrived at Camp McQuaide, California. He is in the coast artillery.
Donald R. Parson, third class gunner’s mate in the navy, who has been action in the Aleutians, at Guadalcanal, at Midway and was at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese4 attacked, is spending a 15-day leave with his mother, Mrs. Hetty Parson, 1400 Grandview Boulevard. Parson suffered shrapnel wound in the neck while on duty in the Aleutians.
Frank K. Scurlock, son of Mrs. Fred Davis, 407 W. Fourth Street, has been graduated from the antiaircraft artillery school at Camp Davis, North Carolina and has received a commission as second lieutenant. Lieut. Scurlock entered service September 12. He formerly was employed by a contractor at Portland, Oregon.
Howard Warren Tolles, 1725 S. Newton Street, son of Mrs. C. W. Tolles, Norfolk, Nebraska was one of a class of 480 men just graduated from the hospital corps school of the naval hospital at Great Lakes, Illinois. Tolles now is rated a hospital apprentice, second class.
Corporal Arthur L. De Laughter has departed foe Camp Edwards, Massachusetts, after spending a 13-day furlough with his father, Roy De Laughter, 1000 Pierce Street. Sergeant Robert De Laughter, a brother, has gone to Kansas City after being called here by the illness of his wife.
Staff Sergeant Lawrence C. Barboe and wife Helen, now stationed at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana, have arrived in Sioux City to spend a 10-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Barboe, 808 Bluff Street.
Private William E. Krone, son of Mr. and Mrs. Pete Krone, 1616 Jones Street, has been transferred from Camp Robinson, Arkansas to Camp Carson, Colorado.

Sergeant James D. Lyle, stationed at Sioux Falls, has returned there after spending three days with his grandmother, Mrs. Ella Dawson, 3601 Fifth Avenue.
Private Alfred S. Cresap, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Cresap, 3214 Marshall Avenue, is entering the ordnance automotive school at Stockton, California. Private Cresap, recently elevated to the rank of private first class, reported to Stockton from Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Private Vernon J. Pugh, son of Mrs. V.H. Pugh, 1205 Jennings Street, has returned to Fort Leavenworth after spending a weekend furlough here.
Corporal Wilbur Lebeck, son of Mrs. Jennie LeBeck, 1210 Court Street, recently received a promotion to his current rank. He is stationed at Roswell Flying School, Roswell, New Mexico.
William John Wagner is spending a nine-day leave with his wife and daughter, Alvina and Anna Louise, at 3803 MaComb Avenue. Mr. Wagner recently completed “Boot” training at Great Lakes naval training station and on his return will attend a gunnery school.
Staff Sergeant Donald Tarrant has returned to Connellsville airport, Connellsville, Pennsylvania after spending 10 days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Tarrant, 1308 24th Street.
Harry F. West, 4509 Fourth Avenue has been promoted from private to technician fifth grade at Camp Tyson, Tennessee.
Corporal William J. Dobbin, 325 14th Street, has been transferred from Fort Belvoir, Virginia to Camp Edwards, Massachusetts. He is in the amphibian command and has completed a course in aerial photography at Fort Belvoir.
Staff Sergeant Herbert E. Lembcke of Sioux City has been promoted to technical sergeant at the air base headquarters at Geiger field, Seattle.
Staff Sergeant Donald K. McKinney has been promoted to technical sergeant at the army air force technical school at Amarillo, Texas.
Seaman Neil Grimsley, son of Mr. and Mrs. S.C. Grimsley, 113 Bluff Street, left today for the Great Lakes Naval Training Station after spending a nine-day leave with his parents. Seaman Grimsley will be assigned to a radio school upon his return to Great Lakes. A graduate of Central High School, he was inducted six weeks ago.
Moses Yanney, son of Mrs. Moses Yanney, 1210 Eighth Street, has been promoted to sergeant at the Hobbs Army Air Field, Hobbs, New Mexico. He is a graduate of Central High School.
Aviation Cadet Leonard R. Stenum, 1709 W. Sixth Street, has completed the army’s primary flight training course at Thunderbird field, Glendale, California. Cadet Stenum lived at Toledo, Iowa before coming to Sioux City.
Vernon J. Flood, a shipfitter, third class, is here on leave visiting his mother, Mrs. F. E. Kremer, 1437 John Street He will leave Friday for a point on the eastern coast where he is stationed. Walter J. Flood, another son, has been promoted to the rank of shipfitter, first class, at another station.

Seaman Cornelius Edwin Beeson, son of Mrs. Anna Beeson of Salix, has returned to the Great Lakes naval training station to resume training in mechanics following a leave spent at Salix with his mother.
William F. Hegenbart, 1808 25th street, has qualified for army air corps at Geiger field, Spokane, Washington.
Private Nick Zandstra is stationed with the army air force technical command at Truax field, Madison, Wisconsin, and his brother, Private Otto Zandstra with the army medical corps at Camp Moxey, Texas. Both are sons of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Zandstra, Edgewater Avenue.
Sergeant Elwood Olsen, stationed at the Santa Ana, California air base, is visiting his mother, Mrs. Anna Olsen, 1101 Jennings Street, on a 14-day furlough. Mrs. Olsen has two other sons in the service, Private Gene Olsen is believed to be somewhere in North Africa and Third Class Fireman Arthur Olsen is somewhere with the navy are unknown.
Staff Sergeant Thomas S. Kimm spent a recent furlough with his mother, Mrs. S. Kimm, and his sister, Aurabelle, 1310 Jackson Street. He stopped here en route to Fort Bennings, Georgia, where he is assigned to officer’s training school.
C. Leverl Ericsson, son of Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Ericsson, 1412 Court Street, has been promoted to the rank of corporal. He is stationed at San Francisco and is in the military police
LeRoy A. Casavant, son of Mr. and Mrs. Loys Casavant, 1911 Ross Street and Frank E. Robinson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Robinson, Sergeant Bluff, are en route to a California camp for training after having been inducted into the marines at Des Moines. Mr. Casavant resigned a position with The Journal-Tribune to enter the armed forces.
Lieut. Louis J. Klass, stationed at Aberdeen proving grounds, Maryland, recently was promoted to captain.
Apprentice Seaman Forrest Eldon Blakley, son of Mr. and Mrs. M.C. Blakley, 2536 S. Cypress Street, is attending a range finder school at North Island, United States destroyer base at San Diego. He enlisted in the navy here September 29 and received his “Boot” training at San Diego. He is a graduate of East High School.
Corporal R.C. Fallon, son of Dr. Robert C. Fallon, 313 Ninth Street, has been promoted to the rank of sergeant. Sergeant Fallon is stationed with the marines at San Diego, California.
Private Albert Greenleaf, son of Mr. and Mrs. N.A. Greenleaf, 3531 Glenn Avenue, has returned to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, after spending a weekend furlough here. In a few days Private Greenleaf will enter an officer’s candidate school in the E.R.T.C. division at Belvoir, West Virginia.
Private Sam Helin, son of Joe Helin, 920 Ninth Street is stationed at the army air forces basic training center at Kearns, Utah.
Private Maurice Walling, stationed at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma, has arrived to spend a 10-day furlough with his wife and five day old son, mother and sister here.
Private Alfred Steele, son of Mrs. Myrtle Steele, 2404 Grand Avenue, recently sent word that he has been stationed at Camp McQuaide, California.
Robert E. Lechtenberg, son of Mr. and Mrs. F.F. Lechtenberg, 515 Fifth Street, has enlisted as naval aviation cadet at Kansas City and will report to the navy preflight school at St. Mary’s college, California. He was a member of football and track teams previous to 1939 at Central High school and later attended the state college at Ames.

Corporal Daniel P. Ruch, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.G. Ruch, 2722 Home Street after spending a 15-day furlough with his parents, has returned to Fort Meade, South Dakota, where he is stationed in the mechanized Calvary. Private Maurice D. Ruch, brother of Corporal, is a member of the army air corps as an aircraft armorer. He is stationed in Alaska.
Marvin J. Woolworth, son of Mrs. Oma Woolworth and private first class in the army, sent Christmas greetings from overseas to his mother this week. Merle E. Hackett, son of Mrs. E.L. Hackett, 2935 Nebraska Street, left Friday for his station at Huntington Park, West Virginia after spending a short leave here. Mr. Hackett is a coast guardsman.
George W. Iseminger, United States Navy, specialist second class, is spending a 10-day leave with his wife who lives at 2111 S. Newton Street, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Iseminger, 106 19th Street. Specialist Iseminger is stationed at the naval hospital at Great Lakes, Illinois, where he is in charge of music for the hospital.
Private Alvin Ross of the medical corps at Camp Chaffie, Arkansas, has been visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Will Ross, 3308 Sixth Avenue, while on a 10-day furlough. He returned to camp Thursday.
Robert Charles Smith, 611 17th Street, was graduated from the army engineer school at Fort Belvoir, Virginia and has received his commission as second lieutenant.
Izadore Lasensky, son of Mr. and Mrs. Max Lasensky, 3529 Nebraska street, was commissioned a second lieutenant in the army engineer corps upon completion of an engineering course at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.

Harold RE. Linafelter, son of Mrs. Marian Mooney, 1007 Ninth Street and Robert W. LaSuer, son of Mrs. F.V. LaSuer, 2109 Boies Street, have been selected as navy specialists and are undergoing courses at the Great Lakes naval training station, Mr. Linafelter as a metalsmith and Mr. LaSuer as a torpedoman’s mate.
Elmer Carver, seaman second class, spent the last week with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Carver, 1203 Eighth Street. He has completed a fire control course at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station and expects to be called to active duty soon.
Kenneth Lechner has been promoted to corporal at the Enid Flying School, Enid, Oklahoma. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Lechner, 2422 Douglas Street.
William J. Tracy, former resident here, has been promoted to first sergeant in the medical corps at Camp Bowie, Texas He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Phil Tracy of Westfield, Iowa. Sergeant Tracy has been in the army since July 10.
George H. Cooley, son of Mrs. Grace Cooley, 215 Cook Street, who enlisted in the army November 30, is stationed at Camp Belvoir, Virginia.

Hartnett have completed a preflight course along with 68 other Iowa’s at the San Antonio aviation cadet center. They left last week for primary flying schools to become pilots.
Louis W. Kuhlman of Belden, Nebraska has been promoted to the rank of corporal at Marana basic flying school at Tucson, Arizona.

Carroll Rashaw, petty officer third class, has just completed a 10-day furlough at his home in Kingsley, Iowa and has returned to his coast guard base.
Second Lieut. William L. Beaubien, son of Mr. and Mrs. William G. Beaubien, 2118 Nebraska Street, received this commission recently upon completion of the officer candidate course at the infantry school, Fort Benning, Georgia. Lieut. Beaubien enlisted in the army, May 10, 1937 and served with the 14th cavalry. He held the rank of corporal before being commissioned.
Capt. Gerald Munns, who is stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, is spending a 10-day leave with his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Farrin, 2021 W. Fifth Street.
Robert W. La Suer, seaman second class, has returned to his studies in the torpedo school at Great Lakes naval training station. He was here on an emergency leave visiting his mother who lives at 2109 Boise Street, and attending the funeral of his father, Fred V. La Suer.
Private First Class Robert C. Brookhouser is spending a furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mr. Fran Brookhouser, in Morningside. He is stationed in the ordinance department at Fort Ord, California.
Ernest L. Moreland, seaman second class, telegraphed Christmas greetings to his parents and Sioux City friends from New York City where he arrived this week from active duty in the Atlantic. Seaman Moreland is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Moreland, 613 W. Fifth Street.
John C. Davis, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.A. Davis, 1912 S. Cypress Street, who recently finished studies at Shephard field, Texas, is now stationed at Baltimore to continue his training as an aerial engineer in the army air corps.

Private Francis Cooley has returned to Camp Bareley, Texas, after spending a 10-day furlough here with his mother Mrs Laura Cooley.
Private Loyal H. Anderson, son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Henry L. McQuigg, 208 17TH Street, who is stationed at Brooks field, San Antonio, Texas is included in a group of cadets who “flew” 691,200 air miles during September and October without leaving the ground. The “flying” was done in a mechanical ground trainer, according to a clipping received here by Mrs. McQuigg from her daughter in San Antonio.

Coxswain Herman Ahrendsen of the coast guard has returned to the United States from Africa. It is Coxswain Ahrendsen’s second trip from Africa. He is expected to arrive this weekend for a visit in his home, 411 Market Street. He is the son of H.P. Ahrendsen of Correctionville.
LeRoy J. Ronning, 18, a son of Mr. and Mrs A. L. Ronning, 930 S. Glass Street, has enlisted as a naval aviation cadet in the naval reserve and been sworn in at6 the Kansas City Naval Aviation Cadet selection board. A student at Iowa State College, he was graduated from East High School last spring.

Private Jack Lowe, his brother, has been promoted to corporal at Camp Butner, North Carolina.
Private First Class Robert J. Hoffman, son of Mrs. John Hoffman, 611 Iowa Street, is a member of the ground force at Elgin field, Florida. Private Irvin C. Hoffman has completed his training for automobile mechanics and is stationed at Camp Walter, Texas. Private Donald Hoffman has been transferred from Fresno, California to Chicago, where he will study radio. Technical Sergeant Charles E. Hoffman is stationed in England. The four are brothers.

Corporal Harvey Richard, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. V. Richard of Salix, is visiting his wife, Gladys Richard, 1410 ½ Silver Street. Corporal Richard will visit his parents during his 10-day furlough from Gowen field, Boise, Idaho.

Corporal Martin Kronick, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. Kronick, 1100 Jennings Street, has been visiting in Sioux City for several days. He will leave Sunday for Camp Shelby, Mississippi, where he has been stationed as a physical instructor, after which he will go to officer training school for chemical warfare in Maryland.
Jack R. Nettleton, pharmacist mate second class, has returned to the naval base at San Diego after spending a week’s leave with parents Mr. and Mrs. Guy R. Nettleton, 1215 S. Newton Street. Pharmacist Mate Nettleton, a Central High School graduate and former Sioux City Journal carrier, has been in the navy since February 1940.

Staff Sergeant Conrad Albert Elverum, 5006 Morningside Avenue, formerly stationed at Camp Croft, South Carolina, has entered an officer candidate’s school, the adjutant general’s school, Fort Washington, Maryland. Upon completing the course he will be commissioned a second lieutenant.
Sergeant J. Ralph Rector is spending a week’s furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.A. Rector of Moville. Sergeant Rector who enlisted last March is stationed at Camp Cooke, California.
Private First Class Robert H. Drain stationed with the Marine Corps at San Diego, who saw active service in the Solomon Island area, has returned to San Diego after spending much of a 30-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank L. Drain, 3225 Lewiston Street. His service in the islands began about August 4 and continued for nine weeks.
Staff Sergeant Harry Heeren and Private Frank Heeren telephoned their parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Heeren, 1015 Pierce Street, from Ireland, extending holiday greetings. They were in the first contingent to go to Ireland.
Private Robert C. Brookhouser has returned to Fort Ord, California, after spending a 12-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. Frank Brookhouser, route 2, Sioux City. He is serving in an ordnance unit that has recruited here last April.

Lyle T. Nelson, seaman first class is home on leave from his station at Minneapolis visiting his mother, Mrs. Agnes Nelson 1619 S. Helen Street. His wife arrived this week from Jacksonville, Florida to spend Christmas with her husband. She later will join him when he arrives to Minneapolis. Seaman Nelson enlisted in April 1941. He attended Central High School.
Wilfred Wachter, seaman first class is spending a brief holiday leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Wachter, Mayfair Hotel. Wilfred enlisted in the navy five months ago and was sent to a training school where he completed a radio technician course. After the first of the year he will report to an Atlantic Coast Navy School for five more months of training.
Apprentice Seaman Lee Horsley is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Horsley, 501 S. Irene Street, during a nine-day leave from the Great Lakes Naval Training Station. Apprentice Seaman Harold Flannigan of Cherokee visited him in the Horsley home recently.
John Swanson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Garfield Swanson, 312 Grace Street, has been promoted to the rank of private first class. Private Swanson is stationed at Camp Adair, Oregon.

Private Charles H. Walcott of the army air force, Chanute field, Illinois, arrived Thursday night to spend a Christmas furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F.M. Walcott 1020 28th Street. Private Walcott is studying to become a flying instructor. He will graduate December 29.
Capt. Russell P. Soper, 1518 Grandview Boulevard, is spending a 10-day leave with his family here. Transportation officer at Camp Campbell, Kentucky, Capt. Soper will return there Wednesday.
Sergeant Nathan Dvorkin, technician fourth grade, who lived at 1522 Ross Street, has been selected as “soldier of the week” at Camp Grant, Illinois by Lieut. Col. R.A. Edmonston, commanding officer of the medical training battalion. The commanding officer said that Sergeant Dvorkin has been selected because of “the unusual initiative and ability he has displayed since he entered the army.” He was inducted November 6, 1941 and a few days later began training in the bakers’ school at Camp Grant. Upon graduation from that course Sergeant Dvorkin was assigned to the medical training battalion. After graduation from high school here in 1934 and until he entered the army he was employed as a baker.
Second Lieut. Arthur N. Bergen, son of Dr. and Mrs. S. D. Bergen, 408 23d Street has been assigned to the quartermaster corps at Camp Grant, Illinois.
Hobart E. Brake, Jr. son of Mr. and Mrs. H E. Brake, 2215 Heights Avenue and Harry K. Holle, 1941 Boise Street are naval aviation cadets who have been assigned to three months of training in the navy preflight school at Iowa City.
Darl S. Lawton, seaman first class, has been transferred from the Great Lakes, Illinois, security watch school for a month’s training in an armed guard school at Gulfport, Mississippi. Mrs. Lawton resides at 2116 w. 14TH Street.
Sergeant Russell Tank, son of William A. Tank, 523 Collins Street and a former employe of the Sioux City Stockyards company, is stationed at Helena, Montana on recruiting duty. He enlisted in the army last July while living at Butte, Montana.
John Thomas Crowley, son of Mrs. Aileen Crowley and a former Sioux Cityan was graduated Saturday from the army air force navigation school at Monroe, La. Crowley was born in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School. Later he moved to Des Moines.
Veryl Murray, stationed at Randolph field, Texas, has been promoted to Corporal. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Murray, 419 Bluff Street.

First Class Private W. “Ted” Thompson who is stationed with the army air corps at Stockton field, California, spent a week’s furlough visiting his father, Fred Thompson, 1617 24th Street; his sister, Mrs. C.E. Lewis, 3011 Center Street and his brother, C.F. Thompson, 104 S. Helen Street. Private Thompson is a former Journal carrier. After he was graduated from Central High School he attended Iowa State Teacher’s College at Cedar Falls for one year.
Staff Sergeant George Zane, stationed with the air corps in Egypt, is a son of Mr. and Mrs. George Zane, Sr., 207 Kansas Street. He has been in Egypt since early November. He enlisted three years ago.
Private Robert D. Treinen, spent the Christmas holidays with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.F. Treinen, 2014 Pierce Street. After Private Treinen was graduated from the radio signal school at Sioux Falls, he was assigned to his present station with the ferry command at Rosecrans field, St. Joseph, Missouri.
Private John F. Lynch spent his Christmas furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Lynch, 921 13th Street. Private Lynch is studying radio at the army air force technical school in the former Congress Hotel, Chicago.

He had been stationed at a bombardier school for the last eight months. Corporal Stanley Kamm, a brother went overseas last February. Recently he has been stationed in England.
Lieut. Richard J. Shipway piloted an army airplane on a trip to Sioux City which enabled him to spend Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.J. Shipway, 2024 S. Maple Street. Lieut. Shipway has now flown back to his station at the army air base, Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Private Robert F. Nourse, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry F. Nourse, 3158 Glenn Avenue, recently was transferred to Indio-Palm Springs, California, having completed three month’s training in an engineers’ corps at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Harry F. Nourse, Jr. petty officer first class, is assistant instructor at the electrical training school, Great Lakes, Illinois.
Private Stanley R. Bos, army air base, Birmingham, Alabama, is spending a 15-day furlough at his home in Hornick, Iowa.
Stanley Katres, of 3077 Myrtle Street, indicted into the army recently, has been assigned for training to the medical replacement training center at Camp Joseph T. Robinson, Arkansas.
Irving Halstead, seaman second class, son of Taylor Halstead, 4138 Van Buren Street, has returned to Norfolk, Virginia, after spending a seven-day leave here with relatives and friends.
Homer Greenleaf, private first class, son of Mr. and Mrs. N.A. Greenleaf, 3531 Glenn Avenue, has been transferred from Camp Joseph T. Robinson, Arkansas to Waco, Texas, where he will enter an ordinance automotive school. Albert Greenleaf, a brother, has been transferred from Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri to Belvoir, Virginia where he will enter officer’s training school.
Merlin Junck, son of Mr. and Mrs. Claus Junck, 4530 Central Avenue, has been stationed in the armored force at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas.
Private James Seger, son of Mr. and Mrs. D.B. Seger, 1412 Jackson Street, has completed a course in Link training at Chanute field, Illinois and will now begin a course in celestial navigation. He spent Christmas day with his wife and parents here.
Burdette L. Phillips is spending a 10-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Phillips and his wife at 2519 Court Street. Mr. Phillips has been graduated from the service school as a third class petty officer of the Farragut, Idaho, naval training base.
Henry F. (Bob) Petersen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Petersen, 1923 Ingleside Avenue, has been promoted to corporal technician, he wrote his family in a letter received this week. Corporal Petersen is with the United States Rangers in Africa. His former neighbor and schoolmate in Sioux City, Jack Swanson, son of Mr. and Mrs. G.S. Swanson and Corporal Petersen met recently in the war zone, both have written home.
Private Gerald E. Rider, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.E. Rider 314 Center Street, spent the Christmas holidays with his wife and parents in their home. Private Rider is stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
Private First Class Richard R. Seaton, of the Marine Corps at San Diego, California arrived Tuesday at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.B. Seaton, 4416 Morningside Avenue, where he will spend his 14-day leave, the first since enlisting May 30, 1942.
Sergeant Henry Schunck, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.G. Schunck, 2020 Douglas Street, arrived Monday to spend a 10-day furlough. He will return to the air base at Yakima, Washington.
Arthur Washburn, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Washburn, 3422 Orleans Avenue and Hobert Brake, Jr. son of Mr. and Mrs. Hobert Brake, 2215 Heights Avenue, are new cadets at the navy preflight school at Iowa City.
Ensign Joseph A. O’Brien, who is attending naval training school at Tucson, Arizona, has been assigned as company commander. Ensign O’Brien is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred O’Brien, 3835 Jackson Street. His wife, the former Ruth Amelia Schott, is a daughter of Dr. and Mrs. John L. Schott, 2910 Nebraska Street.
