Receives Wings
William H. Rozendal, son of Mr. and Mrs. D G. Rozendal, 2410 Eighth Street, has completed flight training at Pensacola, Florida and received his wings in the navy air force.

Soldier Promoted
John Tryszcyla of Sioux City has been promoted to technical sergeant at Camp Roberts, California. He is attached to Company D, 85th infantry training battalion.

Returns To Duty
Stanley L. Ring, seaman second class, left Friday for the Atlantic coast after spending a four-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Ring, 3465 Stone Park Boulevard. Stanley enlisted in the naval reserve January 5, 1942.

Home On Furlough
Jack Rehms, chief commissary steward in the navy, is home on a 15-day furlough visiting his mother and his sister, Mrs. Nell Rehms and Miss Genger Rehms, 2320 S. Henry Street. His wife and son, Larry Vernon are living in Fort Dodge, where he will visit before returning to duty again. He said, “We sailors certainly appreciate the U.S.O.”

Our Men In Service

Private Floyd C. Morris, son of Mr. and Mrs. F.C. Morris, 3221 Athlone Avenue, has reported to the army armored force school at Fort Knox, Kentucky, for training.

Second Lieut. Ernest Jenkinson, Q.M.C., son of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Jenkinson, 2930 Nebraska Street, departed July 23 for Camp Lee, Virginia. Word was received here by his parents that he now has been assigned to duty at Charlotte, North Carolina.

R. Halpern, medical corps, is attached to an air corps unit at Wendover field, Utah.

Private S. F. Kahn has virtually completed his training period at Camp Robinson, Arkansas and expected to be assigned to active duty in the medical corps soon.

After serving with antiaircraft batteries in the coast artillery at San Francisco and Fort Bliss, Lieut. Marvin D. Cohen has been assigned to duty at Camp Stewart, Georgia.

Howard W. Nash, son of Mr. and Mrs. V.E. Nash, 3270 Fourth Street is stationed at Honolulu according to word received by his parents. Nash joined the navy as a ship-fitter in December.

John B. Carey, United States Marine, has been transferred from the naval air station on North Island, San Diego, to Camp Elliott, nearby, to take training in the marine amphibious tank corps service. Bob Ellerd recently left San Diego for an unannounced destination to take training in the same service.

Edward A. Wendel is now in the army finance office at Williams field, Chandler, Arizona having been transferred there from Camp Robinson at Little Rock, Arkansas.

Ensign Edward A. Swift visited here recently in the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Swift, 111 15th Street. He graduated recently from the navy supply school at Cambridge Ensign Swift was on the way to Salt Lake City to visit his wife and their 3-week-old son. He will report Thursday to the navy air base at Norman, Oklahoma.

Darrell Dale Coffman, 314 George Street, has enlisted for flight training, the naval aviation cadet selection board in Minneapolis has announced. He is expected to be ordered to duty at Iowa City in October. Coffman attended Central High School where he participated in track.

Sergeant Robert H. Preston, son of Mr. and Mrs. B. N. Preston, 808 10th Street, has been graduated from the armored force school wheeled vehicle department at Fort Knox, Kentucky, where he finished a 48-day course in repair and maintenance of peeps, jeeps, trucks and scout cars.

Roy James Nelson of Los Angeles, son of Mr and Mrs. A. G. Nelson, 1213 ½ Iowa Street, has enlisted in the United States coast guard and is stationed at Wilmington, California.

A former Sioux Cityan, Private Lawrence Teller, has been transferred to a unit of the army air corps at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. He formerly resided at 1714 Claridge Street.

In Coast Guard
Roy James Nelson of Los Angeles, son of Mr and Mrs. A. G. Nelson, 1213 ½ Iowa Street, has enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and is stationed at Wilmington, California.

Transferred
A former Sioux Cityan, Private Lawrence Teller, has been transferred to a unit of the army air corps at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. He formerly resided at 1714 Claridge Street.

Made Corporal
Milo Johnson, son of Edward Johnson, 2246 Metropolitan Street, has been promoted from the rank of private to corporal at Camp Berkley, Texas. Mr. Johnson has two other sons in the service, Phillip in Northern Ireland and Louis also overseas.

John Tryszcbyia, 1605 Fairmount Street, has been advanced from staff sergeant to technical sergeant at Camp Roberts, California. Sergeant Tryszcbyla is attached to Company D, 85th infantry training battalion.

Three Sioux Cityans have received petty officer ratings and are being instructed in fundamentals of seamanship and naval procedure at Great Lakes training station in Illinois. The men are Fred J. Dreves, Jr., 4029 Harrison Street and Henry A. Ness, 2417 Lakeport Road, both radio technicians, third class and Lawrence M. Jones, 3420 Jones Street, specialist, second class.

Eight other Sioux City men are receiving recruit training at Great Lakes Station. They are Lester W. Burdick, whose wife resides at 1001 Pierce Street: Donald I. Hudson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hudson, 1711 Omaha Street: Sam and Darwin Martin, sons of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Martin, 407 Fourth Street: Vincent L. McMahon, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. J. McMahon, 1921 Riverside Boulevard: Wilfred Wachter, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Wachter, Mayfair Hotel: John T. Donovan, son of Mrs. T. D. Donovan, 1923 Riverside Boulevard and Phillip L. Kemmish, whose wife resides at 1920 McDonald Street.

Dwight M. Davis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lon Davis of Hornick, is undergoing recruit training at the station in Illinois.

Harold A. Garvin 1018 Douglas Street has been promoted to technician, fourth grade at Camp Barkley, Texas. He formerly was technician, fifth grade.

Private Robert Stolze, an instructor in the army air force technical school at Keesler field, Mississippi, is spending a 15-day furlough in the home of his brother, Ralph Stolze, 2105 W. First Street and with other relatives here. A native Sioux Cityans, he entered army service in April 1941.

Roy L. Etheridge, fireman second class in the navy, will return soon to the navy yard in Philadelphia after spending a 10-day leave at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Etheridge, 1937 Nash Street.

Lieut. J. F. Bundy, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. O. Bundy, 2717 S. Glass Street, has arrived here with his wife to spend a leave at the home of his parents. Lieut. Bundy is an instructor at the Naval Air Base at Corpus Christi, Texas.

Sergeant Grant Keating of Fort Omaha is spending a few days leave visiting his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs Fred Miller, 1214 W. 19th Street.

Promotion of Private William S. Brown, formerly of Sioux City, to the grade of private first class has been announced by headquarters of the Oklahoma City air depot. Brown is a member of a supply squadron at the depot. He is the son of guy R. Brown, Scotland, South Dakota. He worked as assistant manager for a Sioux City department store and has been on duty there since April 1.

Private Alvin H. Larson, 2126 W. Second Street has been promoted to technician, fifth grade, a rating similar to that of corporal, headquarters of Camp Bowie, Texas, has been announced. Larson was inducted into the army April 21, 1941. He is assigned to detached corps of military police.

Private Charles A. Diehl, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tony Diehl, 1215 Summit Street, is now a corporal in the army. News of the promotion was received Friday by his parents in a letter from their son, stationed at Camp Rucker, Alabama. He was inducted into the armed forces last June 3.

Mrs. Sarah Stowe, 1404 Virginia Street, received the first word since April 25 from her son, William Boddy, now stationed in Great Britain, in the form of a birthday greeting wire Thursday. Mr. Boddy entered the service with the National Guard in March, 1941.

Sergeant Quentin Hendrickson has returned to Camp Barclay, Texas, after spending a week’s furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. Hendrickson, Carroll apartments. Sergeant Hendrickson’s brother, Private Jay Dean, also at Camp Barclay, was promoted to private first class and received a marksmanship medal.

Mrs. Jacob Maland, 1542 Riverside Boulevard, has received a microfilm “victory letter” from her son, Lieut. Fred Gregg, who is serving in the army quartermaster corps in Hawaii. Lieut. Gregg, a graduate of Central High School, has been in the army five years.

Private Donald E. Calmer, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Calmer, 3050 Stone Park Boulevard, has been commissioned second lieut. in the army signal corps. He is attached to the school of electroconics at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. Lieut. Calmer was associated with the General Electric Company at Schenectady, New York at the time of his induction June 15. He was graduated from Iowa State College at Ames.

Five Sioux Cityans have been graduated from the Great Lakes Naval Training School recently. John A. Beckwith, son of Mrs. J. A. Beckwith, 2713 Clark Street, received rating as aviation machinist’s mate: Gordon H. Behrens, son of Mrs. Esther Behrens, is rated as carpenter’s mate, Lester L. Closner, son of Mrs. Josephine Schurdevin, 1519 Silvey Street, is rated as aviation machinist’s mate: Edward A. Tillery, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Tillery, 2802 Home Street, machinist’s mate and John A. Steil, husband of Mrs. Dorothy Steil, graduated as a machinist’s mate.

Two Sioux Cityans, John A. Caylor and Aldo Bartolomei; are among 36 Iowa College graduates enrolled in the navy’s V-7 program for deck or engineering officer candidates who have been ordered to report to training centers this month or September. The men will go either to Columbia University, New York City or to Notre Dame University, South Bend, Indiana, Lieut. Comdr. T. H. Jones in charge of the branch office of naval officer procurement for Iowa, said. After successful completion of a training course of approximately 120 days, the men are to be commissioned as ensigns in the naval reserve.

Lieut. George T. Davis, son of Mr. and Mrs Frank B. Davis, 710 26th Street, has been transferred from Camp Joseph T. Robinson to the adjutant general’s school, Fort Washington, Maryland. Lieut. Davis started an eight-week training course in classification at the school August 3.

John A. Beckwith, who has been appointed third class petty officer in the navy after recently completing an aviation mechanics’ course at Dearborn, Michigan, is home on leave this weekend, visiting his wife and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Beckwith, 2712 Clark Street.

Private William McAthie, formerly employed at a creamery in Sioux City, is now stationed at Santa Barbara, California where he is taking training in communication service. His mother, Mrs. George McAthie, resides at Centerville, South Dakota.

Corporal John P. McDermott: 23, grandson of Mrs. Mary Murphy, 1659 W. 29th Street, has been transferred from Fort Dix, New Jersey, to active duty in the combat zone. His parents, Mr and Mrs. H.P. McDermott, are former Sioux Cityans.

Private Carl J. Siekaniec, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Siekaniec, 2609 Macomb Avenue, following his enlistment in the army three weeks ago, was assigned to the eighth provisional corps, International Harvester Battalion, Camp Perry, Ohio.

Private Wilbur L. LeBeck has been transferred from Jefferson barracks, Missouri to an air base squadron at Roswell, New Mexico. He is the son of Mrs. Jennis LeBeck and brother of Chester LaBeck, 1210 Court Street.

Cleo J. Clark, private in the Marine Corps, has landed somewhere in the South Pacific, his father, Joe A. Clark of Sloan, Iowa, has been notified. Private Clark enlisted on his 17th birthday anniversary, February 17, 1942.

Dale Orville Teska, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Tebo, 2719 Isabella Street, is stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station. He is a graduate of Central High School.

Kermit Johnson of Lawton is taking an army course in automobile mechanics at Wilmington, Illinois.

Cousins Elmer M. Carver and Marvin B. Carver, who left Sioux City, June 29 to enlist in the navy, are home on their first leave from the Great Lakes Naval Training Station. Elmer is the son of Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Carver, 1203 Eighth Street and Marvin is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Carver, South Sioux City.

Soldier On Furlough
Private Cecil R. Griffith, a Sioux Cityan stationed at Chanute field, Illinois, is spending a week’s furlough at the A. C. Peterson home on Lakeport Road. He has been in the army air force since June 2.

Wins Promotion
John F. Morton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leona Morton, 1619 W. 29th Street, has been promoted to the rank of private first class at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

First Lieut. Paul D. Bruns, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry J. Bruns, 109 14th Street, now is stationed at Langley field, Virginia. Lieut. Bruns is a graduate of Trinity High School, the State University of Iowa and the medical field service school at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania.

Second Lieut. Ernest Leonard Pacquette, brother of Marie L. Chausee, 4405 W. 23d Street, has been graduated from the army air forces officer training school at Miami Beach, Florida and now is prepared to assume executive duties in air forces maintenance.

Private Milton E. Teske, son of Mr. and Mrs. Milton E. Teske, 1400 Silver Street, has been promoted to the rank of technical corporal at Camp Edwards, Massachusetts, where he is stationed. Mrs Teske is now visiting her son at Camp.

Corporal Melvin Olson, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. K. Olson, 3102 Leech Street, has completed his preparatory schooling and is now attending the field artillery officer’s training school at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

Private Robert W. Reid, son of Mr. and Mrs Harold W. Reid, 2320 S. St. Aubin Street, has been graduated from the clerical department if the armored force school at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

First Lieut. John Hess, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. John Hess, 617 W. Eighth Street, has reported for duty with the army at Camp Atterbury, Indiana.

Private Milo A. Watson and wife of Camp Crowder, Missouri are spending a few days in the home of his sister, Mrs. A. Montagne, Alhambra Apartments.

Corporal Thomas Remer has arrived safely in Northern Ireland, according to word received by relatives here. Corporal Remer is the son of Otto Remer of Sioux City and the nephew of Mr. and Mrs. H. N. Duncan, 2313 Leech Avenue.

Gilbert and Wesley Tweet, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Tweet, 2714 West Street, have returned to duty in the navy after a short leave spent here.

Paul M. Strong, son of Mr. and Mrs. L.W. Strong, 3705 Peters Avenue, has been promoted to technician third grade in headquarters of a motorized division at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

Private Walter A. Whitney, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Antrup, Hornick, stationed at Camp Elliott, near San Diego, has been promoted to the rank of private, first class, in the Marine Corps.

William G. Padmore, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Padmore, 715 28th Street, who left here April 22, has completed basic training in the medical replacement training center at Camp Robinson, Arkansas, and was transferred from Company C, 101st medical training battalion to Company B, 108th medical training battalion. He was promoted to the rank of corporal.

Ed Heenan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Heenan, 822 W. Sixth Street, has been promoted to the rank of corporal at Camp Edwards, Massachusetts. He took his preliminary army training at New Orleans.

Corporal Ed J. Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Anderson, 3221 Virginia Street, has returned to Camp Dodge near Des Moines after spending a 10-day furlough with his parents here and with his brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Anderson, in Carroll, Iowa.

Lester L. Closner has been appointed third class petty officer in the navy after recently completing an aviation mechanic’s course at Dearborn, Michigan. At present he is at the United States naval training station, Great Lakes, Illinois. Technical Sergeant Arthur E. Closner, who is in the coast artillery, is now stationed somewhere in Alaska. They are the sons of Mrs. Josephine Schurdevin, 1519 Silver Street.

Three Sioux City boys have enlisted in the navy and are stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station. They are John James Lubanski, 32, 3225 Garretson Avenue; Arthur Thomas Burrs, 23, 401 Omaha Street and John Neil Perschy, 20, 719 Plymouth Street.

Edward Walter Morrison of Climbing Hill, Iowa who enlisted June 26 in the navy in Sioux City, has been choosen as one of the men in his company to receive further training at one of the navy’s aviation mechanics, after completing his training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station. He is home on a 10-day leave now.

Phillip J. Brennan, son of Mr. and Mrs. James T. Brennan, is a clerk in the medical corps attached to the air corps at Miami Beach, Florida and is quartered at the Floridan Hotel. Before joining the army he was prominent in the Junior Chamber of Commerce here.

George Atwood has been promoted to first class seaman at Norfolk, Virginia following four month’s training. He attended the Great Lakes training school before going to Norfolk. Mr. Atwood’s wife resides at 1126 Pacquette Street.

Private Wilmer Mahan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Mahan 117 Sioux Street, is stationed with the signal corps at Camp Crowder, Missouri, according to word received by his wife, Mrs. Ruth Mahan.

Spending Leave Here
Oliver E. Mortrude, chief petty officer of the United States Navy, is spending a 10-day leave with his mother, Mrs. Adah Mortrude, 3127 Jones Street.

Soldier Transferred
Private Harry Lammers, whose wife resides at 2100 Summit Street, has been transferred from Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, to the army base at Presque Isle, Missouri.

Our Men In Service
Lieut. Paul L. Davis, a member of the American expeditionary forces in Ireland, has been promoted to the rank of captain according to a cablegram recently received by his wife. Capt. Davis was a member of the first American group to reach Ireland. At that time he was attached to the regimental staff. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry W. Davis, 1423 Ruby Street, who also have a son, Wilbur in the navy.

Jack Webber, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Webber, 2522 Douglas Street, has been sent to Sheppard field, Texas. He attended Trinity College and is a graduate of Creighton University law School. For the last two years he has been working in Washington as legal adviser for Charles F. McLaughlin, representative from Nebraska.

Four Sioux Cityans have already begun their basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky and are stationed with headquarters armored force. They are Private Leonard B. Zeitner, brother of Mrs. Freda Reeder, 4339 Correctionville Road; Private Sidney Slutsky, husband of Mrs. Marion Slutsky, 317 20th Street; Private Robert A. Gmeinder, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Gmeinder, 514 Main Street and Private Frank B. Huston, husband of Mrs. Frank B. Huston, 4509 Garfield Street.

E. L. Hubbs, son of Mr. and Mrs. James W. Hubbs, Morningside Avenue, has been promoted to aviation machinist, second class, at the Norfolk, Virginia Naval Base. Hubbs enlisted in the navy last February.

Mrs. Katherine E. Jones, 1001 Grandview Boulevard received a letter from her son, Private William E. Jones stating “Arrived in Hawaii.” He enlisted in the medical corps March 24.

Robert E. Forsling, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. V. Forsling, 2215 Jennings Street, has begun training as an army aviation cadet at Randolph field, San Antonio, Texas.

Charles Milton Hindman, son of Mr. and Mrs Charles A. Hindman, 2008 W. Palmer Avenue, now is a seaman, first class. He is a radio man in the navy air corps. Seaman Hindman is stationed at the naval air base at Corpus Christi, Texas.

Archie F. Strunk, attached to the U.S.S. Preston has been promoted from a third class to second class pharmacist mate in the navy. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gaylord F. Strunk, 4045 Capitol Street.

Earnest C. Perkins has been promoted to mess sergeant at Camp Hood, Texas, where he is stationed with the army. He was called into active duty with the National Guard in December, 1940.

Having completed basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station, Arvid Lyle Poston, son of Ray F. Poston, 1419 Morningside Avenue, has begun a metal smith’s 26-week training course at the naval aviation school in Chicago. He enlisted here May 13.

Robert L. Frakes, son of Mrs. A. E. Bergstrom, 1809 Morningside Avenue, has been selected for training as a pilot in the army air force and now is stationed at Kellyfield, San Antonio, Texas. Cadet Frakes was employed in the stationery department of Perkins Bros. Co. before entering the service.

Lieut. Harold J. Driscoll of Sioux City, who is on Foreign Service with a bombardment squadron “somewhere in the Caribbean area,” has been promoted from the rank of second lieutenant to first lieutenant, headquarters of the army Sixth Air Force has announced. Enlistment In Army
Word has been received here by the army recruiting office that two Sioux City men and two men from neighboring towns have enlisted in the army. Richard D. Verstegen, 2503 McDonald Street, enlisted for service in the signal corps and is stationed at Camp Crowder, Missouri; Nile H. Marsh, 1210 Seventh Street and James M. Redl, Newcastle, Nebraska have enlisted in the air corps and will be assigned to an air base for training and Julius E. Martin, George, Iowa enlisted as an engineer in the amphibian corps and will be stationed at Camp Edwards, Massachusetts.

Becomes Glider Pilot
Staff Sergeant Alexander Walter Pavlushik, 601 S. Linn Street, has been graduated from the new advanced glider school at the Lockbourne army air base, near Columbus, Ohio. Second Lieut. George Robert Rew, formerly of New Orleans, recently reported for further flight instructions as a student officer to the Greenville army flying school, Greenville, Mississippi. Lieut. Rew is the son of Lieut. Col. And Mrs. Howard B. Rew. He graduated from Central High school here, and from United States Military academy at West Point.

John McHugh, son of Dr. and Mrs. Charles P McHugh, 1603 Jackson Street, who was stationed with the signal corps at Camp Robinson, Arkansas, has entered the officer’s candidate school of the signal corps at Monmouth, New Jersey.

Kenneth C. Thompson, seaman second class, has returned to the Great Lakes naval training station after spending the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. L. Thompson, 1403 Prescott Street. Thompson enlisted January 31.

Joins Navy Air Force
Charles M. Dobyns, Jr., 4017 Ridge Avenue, has enlisted for flight training in the navy air force. He is expected to be ordered to Iowa City in September to begin training.

Redl, Newcastle, Nebraska have enlisted in the air corps and will be assigned to an air base for training and Julius E. Martin, George, Iowa enlisted as an engineer in the amphibian corps and will be stationed at Camp Edwards, Massachusetts.

Williams, 1729 S. Newton Street, Sioux City. The physician left recently to report for duty at San Diego, California. Dr. Williams served in the last war with the rank of second lieutenant.

Enlists in Navy
John Henry Nichols, 117 Gilman Terrace, is a new arrival for training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station. Nichols enlisted recently as a hospital apprentice, first class.

Radio Operator
Private Robert L. McFee, son of Mrs. Barbara McFee, Princess Apartments, has been graduated from the army radio school at Fort Knox, Kentucky and been awarded a diploma.

Soldier Ends Furlough
Corporal Kenneth DA. Butcher will leave tonight after spending a 10-day furlough with his mother, Mrs. Margaret Butcher, 514 Cook Street and brothers, Clifford, 514 Cook Street and Clyde, 908 Edgewater Avenue. Corporal Butcher is a technician in the gunnery department at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

Re-Enlists In Navy
Erwin “Bud” Smith, 2538 S. Cornelia Street, has reenlisted in the navy with a petty officer’s rating of boatswain’s mate, second class. He had served in the navy four years and had been in civilian life for the last 11 years. Boatswain’s Mate Smith passed final examination at Des Moines and left Saturday for the east coast. He is married and has a daughter, Jo Ann. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Smith, 2522 Shields Avenue.

James Richard Merrill, who enlisted recently, is with an army engineering corps stationed at Camp Bowie, Texas. James is a son of Mr. and Mrs. James D. Merrill, 2420 E. Solway Street.

Marine Overseas
A recent letter from Private Calvin Skoglund of the Marine Corps informed a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Olson, 2600 Jennings Street, of his safe arrival overseas. Calvin enlisted in January of 1942 at the age of 17.

Arrives In England
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Reed, 717 Jones Street, received a cable this morning from their son, William, 24, announcing that he arrived safely in England. He attended Central High School here.

Home On Furlough
Corporal Darrell Cole, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Cole, 1020 Plymouth Street, is spending a 10-day furlough at home. He is stationed at Fort Wadsworth, New York.

Harry O. Hanson, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hansen, 2026 McKinley Street, a recruit in training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station, has been selected to sing with the nationally famous Great Lakes choir for the duration of his elementary training as a sailor.

Sergeant Robert Jacobsen of Camp Polk, Louisiana, is spending a 15-day leave with his mother, Mrs. Blanche Jacobsen, 1103 Nebraska Street. He is accompanied by his wife.

On leave from Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where he is an instructor at the officer’s training school, First Lieut. Raymond W. Carraher is visiting his mother, Mrs. Robert w. Carraher, 1525 Douglas Street. Lieut. Carraher, a graduate of Central High School, will return Wednesday.

Capt. Ernest D. Epstein, a surgeon in the army medical corps, has arrived safely in India, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. H. Epstein, 3525 Vine Avenue, have been informed. Capt. Epstein, who has been in the army several years, is a graduate of East High School and the University of Iowa.

Sergeant Saul Lansburg, stationed in Great Britain with the American army, was surprised recently to meet an old friend from Sioux City. Dr. Lionel London, who also is in the army service. Another surprise for Sergeant Lansburg was to find that a star of the motion picture he saw, Dr. Broadway, was a former neighbor, Macdonald Carey. Lansburg, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Lansburg, 2707 Jones Street, recently was promoted to the rank of sergeant from that of private first class.

Radio Instructor
Walter Abrak, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Abrak, 715 S. Fairmount Street, stopped here for a short time while being transferred from Scott field, Illinois to Sioux Falls as a radio instructor.

Memorial Rites Sunday for Pvt. William Gregory
Special memorial services for Pvt. William A. Gregory, who was killed in France July 13, will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday at Whitfield Methodist Church. Rev. Harry M. Burns, pastor will officiate.
Pvt. Gregory died in action, according to word received by his wife who resides at 1709 W. Fourth Street. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Millard Gregory, 2212 River Drive.
He was born May 3, 1909 at Weber, Kansas. Before entering the armed forces he was employed by Roberts Dairy Company here. He had been overseas since last March. He received his basic training at Camp Wolters, Texas.

Joins Naval Reserve
M. Dean Snider, son of Mrs. G. W. Middleton, 2006 Rebecca Street, has returned to Los Angeles after a visit here to be inducted into the naval reserve as a second class petty officer. His wife will remain here for a short time before joining her husband. Snider left here six years ago and at one time was a carrier-sales-man for The Journal.

Promoted To Sergeant
Lawrence J. Lee of Washington has been promoted to sergeant (temporary) it was announced today at headquarters, army ground forces. Sergeant Lee was inducted here February 21, receiving his recruit training at Aberdeen proving grounds. The son of Mrs. Margaret Lee, he is serving with the army ground forces in Washington.

Home On Furlough
Corporal Lawrence Stulich, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Stulich, 912 S. Paxton Street, is home on a 15-day furlough from Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Corporal Stulich is assigned to post-office work at Fort Sill. He has been in service for six months.

Private Leon A. Urbanos has been promoted to corporal at Victoryville, California, where he is stationed with the army air corps, his wife, who lives at 2608 Correctionville Road has been informed.

A day after she had received a government communication announcing his safe arrival in England, Mrs. Bern Severson of Inwood, Iowa got a birthday greeting from Sergeant Bern Severson, her husband. He is thought to be the first Inwood man to reach England. Sergeant and Mrs. Severson were married in July at Camp Edwards, Massachusetts.

Promoted To Corporal
Private Frank G. Kirsch, stationed at Camp Edwards, Massachusetts, has been promoted to corporal. He is the son of Mr and Mrs. F. M. Kirsch, 3117 Sixth Avenue.

Becomes Corporal
Harold F. Nelson, son of Mrs. Mary Nelson, 3200 38th Street, recently was graduated from the radio school at Scotts field, Illinois. He is now a corporal stationed at Walterboro, South Dakota.

Lawrence J. Lee of Washington has been promoted to sergeant (temporary) it was announced today at headquarters, army ground forces. Sergeant Lee was inducted here February 21, receiving his recruit training at Aberdeen proving grounds. The son of Mrs. Margaret Lee, is serving with the army ground forces in Washington.

A day after she had received a government communication announcing his safe arrival in England, Mrs. Bern Severson of Inwood, Iowa got a birthday greeting from Sergeant Bern Severson, her husband. He is thought to be the first Inwood man to reach England. Sergeant and Mrs. Severson were married in July at Camp Edwards, Massachusetts.

Corporal Lawrence Stulich, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Stulich, 912 S. Paxton Street, is home on a 15-day furlough from Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Corporal Stulich is assigned to post-office work at Fort Still. He has been in the service for six months.

Private Leon A. Urbanos has been promoted to corporal at Victoryville, California, where he is stationed with the army air corps, his wife, who lives at 2608 Correctionville Road, has been informed.

Harold F. Nelson, son of Mrs. Mary Nelson, 3200 38th Street, recently was graduated from the radio school at Scotts field, Illinois. He is now a corporal stationed at Walterboro, South Carolina.

Private Frank G. Kirsch, stationed at Camp Edwards, Massachusetts, has been promoted to corporal. He is the son pf Mr and Mrs. F. M. Kirsch, 3117 Sixth Avenue.

News From Our Boys

Named Corporal
Corporal Lewis H. Lowry, 90th division, Camp Barkeley, Texas, has recently been promoted from the rank of private, according to word received by his wife, Mrs. Evelyn Lowry, postmaster at Stevens. He has been stationed at the camp for five months.

Soldier Promoted
Raymond Erickson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Erickson of LeMars, has been promoted to corporal at Camp Barkeley, Texas, where he is stationed. Corporal Erickson was inducted into the army March 22.

With Armored Force
Capt. Joy R. Bogue, son of Alfred T. Bogue of Pierson and a former Morningside college student, has been assigned to an armored division at Camp Polk, Louisiana, where he is stationed. Capt Bogue attended the field artillery school and graduated in 1940. This year he was graduated from the command and general staff school at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. His wife is the former Dorothy McGrow.

Enlists In Navy
Ward O. Watkins, a former Sioux Cityan, now of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, has enlisted in the navy and has gone to San Diego, California for training. He formerly attended Central High School. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Watkins.
The family moved to Scottsbluff last September.

Arrives Overseas
Mrs. Jack Swanson, 212 14th Street, has received a cablegram from her husband, Private Swanson, stating he had arrived safely in Great Britain. Private Swanson is in the medical corps and was formerly stationed at Camp Grant, Illinois.

Back To Navy
Delmar C. Stone has completed a four-day leave spent with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John J Stone, 509 W. First Street Stone, third class petty officer in the navy is attending radio school at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He enlisted last February as an apprentice seaman.

Letter From Ireland
Mrs. Mrs. C. P. Stevens of Leeds has received a letter from her son, Private Worth Walker, who is stationed In Ireland. He left Sioux City with the National Guard and was stationed at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana, before going overseas.

Army School Graduate
Private Robert E. Gleeson, son of Mrs. W. B. Gleeson and nephew of Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Sam, 4522 Manor Circle, has been graduated from the advanced course in the army finance school at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indiana. He has been assigned to an armored division at Los Angeles.

Tommy Haddad, son of Ed Haddad, 619 1/2 Court Street, has been promoted to corporal, his father has been notified. He is stationed in Northern Ireland.

In Radio School
Robert K. Dahlin, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. N Dahlin, 1317 S. Cornelia Street, has been transferred from Camp Crowder, Missouri to Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, where he has entered radio officer’s training school.

At Navy School
Arthur F. Moran, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Moran, 2529 Second Street, has received a third class rating in the signal corps at Norfolk, Virginia and is attending school at the amphibious force training base at Little Creek, Virginia. Moran enlisted September 8, 1941.

Soldier Transferred
Private Lawrence Teller of the army air corps, a former Sioux Cityan, has been transferred from Jefferson barracks, Missouri, to McChord field, Tacoma, Washington.

Infantry Training
Private F. O. (Whitey) Rosenberger, 4816 Morningside Avenue a former Morningside college athletic star, is receiving preliminary instructions in use of infantry weapons in a 13-week basic training period at Camp Roberts, California.

Arrives In England
Sergeant Henry E. LeMaster has arrived safely in England, he cabled his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. R. LeMaster, 4000 Jefferson Street.

Promoted To Captain
Lieut. Frank R. Harding, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. V. Harding, 1400 W. Fourth Street, has been promoted to captain. He is stationed at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, where he is assigned to the military police. Capt. Harding entered the service two years ago.

Arrives Overseas
Mrs. Donald Schmidt, 211 Alice Street, received a cablegram from her husband, Private Schmidt, that he had “arrived” safely in Great Britain.” He is in the medical corps formerly stationed at Camp Grant, Illinois.

Returns To Duty
Second Gunner’s Mate Clifford Quintard, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Quintard, 4302 Polk Street, has returned to duty after spending 15 days with his parents.

Marine Parachutist
Private Richard L. Johnston, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Johnston, 424 W. First Street was graduated today as a member of a marine parachute battalion at San Diego. Johnston, who enlisted in the marines here February 2, is the fifth generation of the Johnston family to serve his country.

Sailor Promoted
Homer A. Leedom, son of Mrs. Lillie Leedom, 1407 Chicago Avenue, has been promoted to machinist mate, third class, in the air corps at Norfolk, Virginia. Mr. Leedom has been in the service since May 14, 1941.

Flier Home On Leave
Lieut. Henry Mohr arrived this morning to spend a four-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry O. C. Mohr, 1701 S. Paxton Street. Lieut. Mohr will report back to the west coast from here. He received his early training in the air corps in Texas and was graduated August 5 from an advanced training school in Moorefield, Texas. Lieut. Mohr is a graduate of Central High School and a former student at Iowa State College at Ames.
