Inspired Men to Stop Germans

By Frank Miles

With the Fifth Army in Italy (IDPA) -- Lt. John F. Sjulin, Hamburg, with his pistol blazing, inspired his men to repulse a strong German counter-attack.

The evening before, when his platoon was engaged with the enemy, he was knocked down by an exploding shell and his glasses were broken. He leaped to his feet. Despite his inability to see well, he led his forces to victory.

The lieutenant has been awarded a bronze star for heroic achievement in action in recognition of his valor and example in those engagements.
