Paid for Their Fun
Justice is sometimes slow but generally it is sure and the boys who, two years ago, tipped over and damaged an outhouse belonging to Worth county now have a new respect for the blindfolded lady with the scales in her arms.
At Halloween time in 1917 this paraticular piece of county property, which stood on the court house grounds, in Northwood, was moved from its foundations, upended and otherwise damaged. Now be it known that county, state or municiipal property is more or less sacred in the eyes of the law and in pulling off this particular stunt the perpetrators laid themselves liable to indictment by the grand jury
Sheriff Gulickson quietly proceeded to ferret out the persons who did the damage and after two years finally rounded up the boys recently. They were taken before the proper authority, allowed to plead guilty and fined an aggregate sum of $65. There was a somewhat surprised lot of youngsters when they found that after two years of alleged security they were finally taken in charge and compelled to pay for some doubtful fun they had all but forgotten.
Times have changed considerably and authorities are not nowdays overlooking many practical jokes as formerly, especially when these alleged jokes take the form of property destruction. It might be well for Northwood boys and young men who are planning to carry out some Halloween pranks this month figure up carefully and see whether or not they can afford it - Northwood Anchor. |
