Five Tragic Deaths in Worth County During 1947
2 Killed on Highway But No Polio Death In Worth in Year

Continuing a custom of several year’s standing. The Anchor presents herewith a list of deaths of persons residing in Northwood and vicinity, with a number of others who were former residents and were well known here, as found in the issues of the year 1947.  Worth County again escaped any serious epidemics of illness, nor were there any deaths from polio during the year 1947.  There were two deaths from highway accidents and two other accidental deaths recorded.  One death was declared by a corner’s jury to have been self inflicted.  The list as prepared is as follows:

JANUARY
1 – Mrs. Ingebret Tollefson, 86, at her Bristol Township home. Mrs. Hanna B. Wormer, 88, former Gordonsville resident, at Center Point, Iowa.
2 – Mrs. Erna Luth, 59.  Mrs. Andrew Hengesteg, 78, Hartland Township resident all her life.
4 – E. J. McQuatters, 82, in a Mason City hospital following illness.
5 – Theodore Knutson, 68, Glenville, resident of Freeborn County all his life.
9 – C. S. Espelund, 86, native of Norway, resident here 63 years.
12 – Mrs. Jennie Crowell, 90, of Manly
13 – R. H. Goodell, 77, Hanlontown, in a Mason City hospital of injuries suffered Dec. 9 when struck by a car near his home.
16 – Mrs. F. L. Suby, 75, a Joice resident.
19 – Mrs. Chris J. Nelson, 52, after extended illness.
20 – Martin A. Harmon, 79, at Muskegon, Mich.; funeral here Jan. 24th.
27 – Mrs. Otto Smeby, 75, in a Mason City hospital.
28 – Robert S. Hickock, 68, Fertile, in a Mason City hospital.

FEBRUARY
5 – Robert E. Hove, 55, in a Mason City hospital after a long period of ill health.  Arndt Olson, 68, at Paul Thompson home, Deer Creek.
7 – Charles Reeder, 82, in the hospital at Albert Lea.
12 – Andrew L. Garnas, 62, former resident, at Tacoma, Wash.
15 – Mrs. Augusta Ziebell, 83, of Myrtle, Minn.
17 – J. F. Ogden, 63, former resident near Meltonville, at Osage.
22 – Mrs. J. W. Godfrey, 68, died suddenly at her home.  Fred Fluhrer, 65, at Grafton.
25 – Arnold B. Anderson, a well known Lake Mills funeral director.
27 – Mrs. J. H. Burke, 81, former Northwood and Grafton school teacher, at Fitzgerald, Ga.

MARCH
6 – Arthur E. Finch, 74, at a Mason City hospital.
11 – Hannes Janssen, 46, died suddenly of heart attack at his home.
14 – Iver Nelson, 64, died suddenly at his desk at Falk Machine Shop.
15 – C. J. Magnusen, 67, former Northwood baker, at Blue Earth, Minn.  Ward Barnes, 63, Eagle Grove, editor and prominent Republican leader.
20 – Wallace Edwards, 37, at veteran’s hospital, Des Moines.  Ill since receiving medical discharge from the Navy in 1943.
21 – Mrs. J. A. Lande, 77 died suddenly at her home.
24 – Miss Louise Butler, 72, after long period of ill health.
26 – Word received of the death of Mrs. Lena M. Henderson, 83, former Northwood resident, at San Diego, Calif.
27 – Lage G. Iverson, 74, at Kensett, ill three years.
28 – Hans P. Christianson, former resident here, at Mason City.
29 – Mrs. Henry Talle of Silver Lake Township, killed when auto overturned on highway near her home. Earling Reierson, 34, former Kensett resident killed in a car collision near Gordonsville.  Francis Nugent, 29, of Mason City, driver of the other car, killed in same crash.  Delia Heiny, 62, Manly, following surgery.
30 – Caleb Stock, 71, Kensett.  Henry Hagen, 61, former Northwood resident, at Waterloo.

APRIL
1 – Mrs. Knut Knewtson, 78, of Joice.
3 – Rev. H. O. Bjorlie, 70, of Faribault, Minn., native of Worth County and son of Caroline Loberg Bjorlie, who was the first white child born in Silver Lake Township.
6 – Mrs. Daniel Miller, Hanlontown, former Northwood resident.
7 – Sam J. Sorenson, Silver Lake Township farmer.
11 – Mons Monson, 88, of Hanlontown.
16 – Mack Gullickson, 75, in a Mason City hospital after a stroke.
18 – Mrs. Hugo Wolff, 77, at the home of her daughter north of Northwood.
19 – Anton Sundvold, 58, Northwood contractor.
24 – Elling Harmon, 75, resident of Brookfield Township all his life.
27 – Louis Foss, 67, at his home near London.

MAY
6 – Emil Anderson, 84, at home of daughter, Mrs. Anna Nummedahl.
8 – H. H. Douglass, 68, at his home; resident here 29 years; served as elevator manager 23 years; president of fair society 13 years; active in civic affairs.  Nels O. Sorbo, 87, at the home of son, Selmer, in Silver Lake Township.
15 – Wm. C. Carmody, 65, at Albert Lea; invalid several years.
22 – Mrs. Carrie Thorson, 89, oldest resident in Otranto Township.  Mrs. Wm. J. Smith, 56, former Northwood resident, at Mason City.
23 – H. E. Gray, 87, former Kensett business man, at Baltimore, Md.
26 – Mrs. A. P. Dahlby, 87, Joice, at a Mason City nursing home.  Mrs. Johanna Amundson, 62, died suddenly at her home in Joice.

JUNE
1 – Albert Woods, 43, died suddenly of heart attack.
2 –Mrs. Henry T. Hanson, 71, died suddenly of a stroke.
3 – “Jimmie” Wright, 66, resident of Worth County all his life, at Kensett.
5 – Bert Perry, 53, died suddenly of heart attack.  Arne Arneson, 83, at his farm home near Joice.
6 – Selmer Lee, 47, lifelong resident of Carpenter vicinity, in a hospital at Austin, Minn.  Ross Cobeen, 38, Manly, accidentally killed at Lehigh Cement plant, Mason City.
7 – Mrs. George Gillerman, 65, of Grafton, after a long illness.
16 – C. D. Cottingham, 74, ill three years.  James Hall, 65, former Deer Creek Township resident, at Mason City.
17 – Dr. Dow A. Rice, 55, at Marshalltown.  Nels Foley, 71, at home of daughter, Mrs. W. F. Becker, north of Northwood.
18 – Mrs. John Bork, 68, Grafton resident more than 50 years.
28 -  Miss Amanda Irene Myli, 42, near Kensett.  Martin L. Strand at Strool, D. Dak; burial here July 5.  Martin Bergstad, 63, former Northwood resident, at Sterling, Ill.; burial here

JULY
8 – Clarence O.Sheimo, 69, Fertile, in Mason City hospital.
10 – Jacob Rusley, 74, died suddenly at his home at Joice.
13 – Adel Hanson, 86, Worth County resident 80 years.
18 – Edwin Alertson, 19, killed in a hay baler accident west of Northwood.
20 – Gilbert H. Hanson, 76, after a long illness.  Mrs. Paul Staebler, 44, the former Bernice Pangburn, of Kensett, killed in an auto accident near Floyd.
21 – R. M. Sherrard, 65, died suddenly at his home near Bolan.
22 – Mrs. Nils Lunde, 76, former Deer Creek resident, at Adams, Minn.
23 – Mrs. W. H. Pangburn, 60, Kensett, died of heart attack in Charles City hospital; stricken en route to the rites held for her niece, Mrs. Paul Staebler.
28 – Claire Aanrud, 2 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Aanrud, in a Mason City hospital, where he was taken after he had eaten pills at his home that he mistook for candy.
29 – Harlan Olson, 3 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Olson.
30 – Mrs. Nora Hambly, 54, in a Rochester, Minn. Hospital.

AUGUST
1 – Mrs. John Holt, 57, at her home west of Northwood.
4 – Mrs. Elizabeth Olmstead, 88, Mason City, formerly of Kensett.
12 – Mrs. Ingval Walswick, 62, native of Worth County, at Northwood, N. Dak.
13 – Albert Schuhmacher, 51, formerly of Myrtle, died while driving his car in Albert Lea.
14 – Mrs. Ellen Loberg, 73, at her home in Northwood.
16 – Mrs. E. J. Collins, 61, London, at a hospital in Albert Lea.
23 – Thomas Knutson, 85, found dead in the yard of his home at Hanlontown of natural causes.  Mrs. C. J. Wall, 67, died suddenly at her home in Northwood.
24 – Mrs. Mikkel Bratrud, 81, at her home in Danville Township.  Ole R. Moen, 63, former Kensett resident, at a hospital in Los Angeles, Calif.
28 – Mrs. Martie Y. Moore, 85, at the Eastern Star Home in Boone.

SEPTEMBER
10 – Mrs. Jean Sawin, 98, at Western Old People’s Home, Cedar Falls; came to Worth County from her native Scotland when 9 years old.
12 – John Eagen, 81, formerly of Kensett, at home near Glenville.  Selmer Anderson, 45, former Carpenter resident, at Indianapolis, Ind.
13 – Ed Thompto, 82, at his home in Grove Township.
14 – Guy C. Toye, 91, former Northwood postmaster and prominent in business, at his home here.  Kaye Ann Adrian, 7 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Adrian of Carpenter of leukemia in a Mason City hospital.  Mrs. John Landdeck, 94, widow of early pastor of Grafton Lutheran Church, at Maple Leaf, Iowa.
27 – Mrs. Melvin J. Peters, 21 formerly of Glenville, in an auto crash at Minneapolis.

OCTOBER
2 – Mrs. Oscar Brua, 58, Fertile, in a Forest City hospital.
4 – Colbert Colbertson, 84, St. Ansgar, in Charles City hospital.
10 – Mrs. Ira Erickson, 67, formerly of Kensett, at Graettinger.
11 – G. L. Torgerson, 54, Glenville, son of Abraham Torgerson of Northwood, in an auto collision north of Glenville.
17 – Miss Anne Nystuen, 89, at her home in Northwood.
19 – Miss Bertha Kirchgatter, 79, Grafton, in a Mason City hospital.
20 – Mrs. Mary McQuatters, 82, a Worth County resident 63 years, at Gordonsville.
21 – Mrs. Amanda Boutelle, 90, of Kensett.  Mrs. Louis Reindl, 41, of Manly, died in a Mason City hospital of burns suffered at her farm home.
23 – Miss Vina Halverson, 63, Fertile.
24 – Oluf L. Brunsvold, 75, resident of Kensett 74 years, died suddenly in the office of a Clear Lake doctor.  Dorothy Lou Christian, 13, died suddenly while sitting in a chair, visiting with schoolmates in the Emmons, Minn. School gymnasium.
27 – Mrs. Chris Schott, 76, at her home in Hanlontown.

NOVEMBER
2 – E. M. Glassel, 80, Grafton, in a Mason City hospital.  Arthur Ball, 47, Joice, while en route to a doctor’s office in Lake Mills.  Rev. Jacob Rugland, 80, Fargo, N. Dak., native of Worth County.
7 – Mrs. K. O. Roppe, 69, died while at evening meal at her home in Brookfield Township.  Teman N. Gordon, 75, at his home near Kensett.
8 – Diana Pike, 30, formerly of Deer Creek, died in an Austin hospital after a few hours’ illness.
13 – Mrs. R. A. Hinman, 67, at her home in Northwood after an extended illness.
24 – A. M. Gilpin, 64, Mason City, former Northwood merchant and insurance agent.
25 – Elmer G. Gullickson, 60, at Minneapolis veterans’ hospital.  Nels Levorson, 85, at home in Brookfield Township.
28 – Mrs. George Bloker, 85, of Kensett, at Mason City.
29 – Raymond Moen, 37, formerly of Kensett, at Detroit, Ore., burial at Elk Creek Cemetery.

DECEMBER
1 – Sam Groff, 67, formerly of Northwood, at Albert Lea.  Elon Nack, formerly of Grafton, at Phoenix, Ariz., on his 31st birthday.
7 – Col. H. A. White, 77, native of Worth County and prominent retired military officer, at San Antonio, Texas.
9 – Albert L. Harmon, 64, at his home here.  Mrs. Nels Nelson, 81, Fertile resident, at home of a daughter, near Lake Mills.
14 – Mrs. Katherine Baldwin, 81, of Fertile, in a Mason City hospital.
