HISTORY OF MITCHELL AND WORTH COUNTIES, IOWA, VOL. II, 1918, page 350

Among the progressive business establishments of Fertile is the hardware and farm implement store of the firm of Sheimo & Nelson, of which Carl M. Sheimo is the senior partner. He is one of the well-known young businessmen of the county. He was born in Fertile township on the 5th of April, 1891 and is a son of Kittle 0. and Marie (Ouverson) Sheimo, the former a native of Norway, while the latter was born in Wisconsin. Extended mention of them is made on another page of this work.

Carl M. Sheimo was educated in the district schools and in the school of experience has learned many valuable and practical lessons. In his youthful days his time was devoted to the acquirement of his education through the winter months, while the summer seasons were given to farm work and oil attaining his majority he began farming on his own account. He at first rented land, cultivating the old homestead farm in that way for a year. He next rented a neighbor's farm for a year and later he returned to the old homestead and operated the home farm for two years more. In 1916, however, he turned his attention to commercial pursuits, entering into partnership with B. A. Nelson. They purchased the hardware and implement business of the firm of Lang & Ouverson in Fertile and thus organized the firm of Sheimo & Nelson. They are both young, progressive businessmen, alert and energetic, and they have built up a trade that is most gratifying. Their methods are thoroughly progressive and they ever recognize the fact that satisfied patrons are the best advertisement. They are therefore doing everything possible to please their customers and thus their trade is growing month by month.

In September, 1913, Mr. Sheim was united in marriage to Miss Hilda Sagen, a daughter of Halvor Sagen, one of the early settlers of Fertile township, now deceased. Mr. Sheimo is a stalwart adherent of republican principles and does all in his power to promote the growth and insure the success of his party. He is now serving as a member of the town council of Fertile and is one of the most progressive businessmen and representative citizens of his community. He and his wife are members of the Norwegian Lutheran church and their interests and sympathies are along lines that make for development and progress in the community in which they live. Mr. Sheimo never fails to respond to the call of opportunity and his record is proof of the fact, as a modern philosopher expressed it, that success does not depend upon a map but upon a timetable. In other words, not upon location but by the wise and prompt use of the chances which come to the individual.
