Dr. Charles W. Powell Biography

Dr. Charles W. Powell

Dr. Charles W. Powell, who is enjoying a large practice at Manly, Iowa, was born at Mount Hamill, Iowa, on the 8th of May, 1872, his parents being David and Arey (Overton) Powell. The father's birth occurred at Reynoldsburg, near Columbus, Ohio, in 1844, and he is a son of George Washington Powell, who was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, where he followed the occupation of farming in early manhood, while later he became a resident of Franklin county, Ohio, where he also carried on general agricultural pursuits. Eventually he removed westward to Lee county, Iowa, where he purchased land and continued to devote his time and energies to farming throughout his remaining days, both he and his wife passing away in Lee county. Their son, David Powell, was reared upon the old homestead farm in Ohio and pursued his education in the public schools there. On attaining his majority he came westward with his parents, the family home being established near West Point, in Lee county, Iowa. He left home at the time of his marriage and purchased a tract of prairie land in Lee county, after which he concentrated his efforts and attention upon the development and improvement of his farm, which he converted into one of the valuable and productive properties of that section of the state. In 1900 he sold his property and removed to Mount Hamill, Iowa, where he retired from active business. His wife was born at West Point, Iowa, in 1844 and passed away on the 25th of March, 1905, when sixty-one years of age, after which the father made his home with his son, Dr. Powell, at Zearing, Story county, and is now living with him in Manly. He has reached the age of seventy-three years. In politics he has maintained an independent course, voting for men and measures.
