HISTORY OF MITCHELL AND WORTH COUNTIES, IOWA, VOL. II, 1918, page 648
Alex K. Felland, proprietor of a heating and plumbing business in Joice, was born in Fertile township, Worth county, on the 28th of March, 1888, and is a son of Knute and Margit (Huvestad) Felland. He was reared upon his father’s farm in Worth County and at the usual age he became a pupil in the district schools. When a youth of sixteen, however, he left home and started out in the business world on his own account. Going to North Dakota, he there spent six or seven months looking over the country, after which he returned to Worth County and was variously, employed up to the time he went to Montana. He settled in Conrad, that state, and there engaged in contracting and building, with which business he was identified for about four years. In the spring of 1909 he filed on a homestead of one hundred and sixty acres near Conrad and proved up on that property. In 1913 he returned to Worth county, Iowa, and located in Joice, after which he traded his Montana homestead for a hardware and implement business. He successfully conducted this store as proprietor for nearly five years. He, then traded the business for a farm of one hundred and sixty acres in Winnebago county, Iowa, on the 7th of January, 1918, and since that time he has been engaged in the plumbing and heating business at Joice and has a well equipped establishment, while receiving a liberal patronage in that line. He also owns one hundred and sixty acres of farmland in Kidder county, North Dakota.
His career has been one of indefatigable enterprise and industry and step-by-step he has worked his way upward, winning a substantial measure of success as the years have gone by.
On the 3d of August 1913, Mr. Felland was united in marriage to Miss Martha Shelwick, of Scarville, Winnebago County, Iowa. They now have one child, Mercedes Adelaide. Fraternally Mr. Felland is connected with Aurora Lodge, No. 412, I. O. O. F. He and his wife are members of the Norwegian Lutheran church and are loyal to its purposes and teachings. In politics he maintains an independent course. He is recognized as one of the foremost citizens of Joice, alert and energetic, and while carefully conducting his business interests he is at the same time always ready to assist in measures and movements for the general good.
