A Reminiscence. From the “old 'un“ of the West Union Gazette: Tomorrow Is the 6th of April. Thlrty-nine years ago the 6th of April occurred on Sunday. We attended a service on that occasion down In Mississippi, and there was nothing divine in it except the cause we were there to serve. The Johnies made it a day hotter than any hell the most orthodox preacher over Imagined Beauregard promised his soldiers they should drive us into the Tennessee river or he would water his horse in hades. They failed of the one, and his horse had to drink creek water, tinged with blood. But they made such desperate onslaughts at the beginning of the day that for a time it seemed Beauregard’s promise would be fulfilled Two divisions. Hurlbut’a and Prentiss’s, held them In check till the day was largely spent, and although outflanked and the latter captured, the enemy were so badly crippled, with their leader dead, they were glad to quit while the river was two miles away. The next day after a feint, they fled pell-mell toward Corinth, and the battle of Shiloh was a victory for Gen. Grant and the Union cause.
