Please provide a description of your research problem and tell us how many hours of research you want done at the above rate. Send the first $15.00 and a SASE with your first request. You will be billed for the balance research cost upon completion of research. Whenever possible, you will receive a photocopy of the record or if that is not possible, a transcription of the record. Cost of Photocopies: 25 cents per page.
You will be provided with a summary of the research results and if your request requires another area, we will refer it to another genealogy association for action.
If you require further research, and estimate of further research time will be provided upon request.
Unfortunately, we can not guarantee results but will give your request a thorough effort. You are welcome to visit our genealogy library and do your own research. Volunteers are available to assist you.
Decorah Genealogy Association and Winneshiek County Historical Society share their meetings, take turns providing programs and hold alternate business meetings. During the winter months of November, January, February, March, April: 2nd Saturday of the month at 1:30 pm, generally in the public meeting room of the Decorah Public Library. During the summer months, May, June, August, Sept, October, 4th Monday of month at 7:00 pm in the public meeting room of the Decorah Public Library. No regular meeting during July and December. Notice of changes of the regular schedule or location are published in the local newspapers, on local access tv channel, and on www.decorahnews.com.
DGA Annual Meeting: 2nd Saturday in March prior to regular program meeting.
The DGA Family and Local History Research Center is open Monday through Friday, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. We can be reached by phone at (563) 382-4197 during library hours and anytime at firstname.lastname@example.org. For research needs outside of library hours, special appointments may be arranged- depending on volunteer availability (the DGA Research Center is staffed by all volunteers). While there is no charge to use the library facilities, contributions are accepted.
Newsletter and Membership
Decorah Genealogy Association and
Winneshiek County Historical Society partner in publishing the quarterly
newsletter, which is mailed out to members of both organizations.
The newsletter includes feature articles on topics of interest to both
memberships relative to the history of our county. It also includes news
for the two organizations: acquisitions, obituaries of departed members,
reviews of our programs, and a calendar of upcoming meetings and events
sponsored by these organizations.
Household membership - $25.00
Supporting membership - $50.00
We no longer offer lifetime memberships but honor those that were made during our early years.
Membership is for the calendar year. Notice of membership renewal come in the last and first issues of the quarterly newsletter with is a benefits of membership.
If interested in becoming a member and supporting this group, checks for membership dues should be made payable to Decorah Genealogy Association, and sent to the 808 River Street address, along with your name, address, phone number and e-mail contact information.
Resources and Research Library
DGA Volunteers will undertake research at a rate of $15 per hour, plus photocopying a 25 cents per page at the DGA Family and Local History Center, plus postage.
Winneshiek County Pioneer Certificates
Pioneer Certificates for descendants of Pioneer settlers of Winneshiek County – those settling in the County by 1856 – are still available from the Decorah Genealogy Association. Descendancy must be shown from a Winneshiek County Pioneer. Please contact the DGA for an application form. The fee for the certificate is $5.00. This is an ongoing project.
Maintenance of index and files for obituaries, marriages, births and baptisms, graduations, from local newspapers; Veterans files: historic properties files, prominent citizens/families files; subject files for local history; Winneshiek County township files.
Throughout the year there are a variety opportunities to assist with programs, special events, fundraising, as well as helping in the research library. We will provide training for volunteers wishing to help in the library.
We are in need of volunteers to help with the booth we share with the Historical Society at the Winneshiek County Fair in July; help with setting up and taking down chairs or providing refreshments for our regular program meetings; for helping to plan special events like our annual Christmas Party. We also need help with preparing the mailing of our newsletters. Many hands make light work.
