Stacey Gossling, a board member of the Winneshiek County Historical Society, was at the Luther College library using their microfilm reader and scanner to develop old negatives. When she started having a problem with turning the negatives into an actual photo she asked for some help. That's when Ryan Gjerde, came over to help her. Ryan is the Luther College, Library Director and Digital Initiatives Librarian. They started to chat about how nice it would be if the newspapers were on line. That way anyone in the world can do research about Winneshiek County, starting back in the 1860's. Stacey and Ryan felt there was a need to have these papers available on line. So, Luther College and the Winneshiek County Historical Society collaborated on making it happen. Genealogy has become a passion of so many people. But, if your family was in Winneshiek County there was nothing available on line to do research. And a lot of people don't have the time or funding to travel here to sit at a microfilm reader for hours on end. Part of the fun of doing genealogy is the hunt for information. Not everyone wants to hire someone to do the work for them. They want to do it themselves.
