The list is not yet complete. The committee is still soliciting, next week other names will be added, of those who have promised to subscribe.
It will he noticed that a collection has not yet been attempted from the smaller subscribers—those who can contribute $10 and $5. There should, and there doubtless will be, a large number of these. But, as the committee said last week they have not the timo to mako a personal canvass of all. They trust these will come forward with their volunteer offerings.
There is still another list—those who can give day’s work, if they cannot pledge definite sums. The rebuilding will give employment to every mechanic of every class, at remunerative wages. A list for these especially has been formed, and can be found with either of tho other lists, at the First National Bank or Ben Bear’s store.
The committee to pass upon the whole question assembles in this city on the 19th, and the committee often desire at that time to make as strong a showing as possible. Therefore all that is done in this direction should be conusmated before this date if possible, before next Wednesday.
As has heretofore been said, if this were a question of money competition. Decorah with her 3500 population and limited means, could not contest the ground with wealthy cities like Minneapolis or LaCrosse. But the traditions of the college are here. Fully onehalf the cost of new grounds (of far lesser beauty and worth) and new buildings, remain ready for use and to build upon. The old could be restored in a few months; while on a new site two years would be required to put up even the main structure. These would be years of loss to many who would, if they could, use the college facilities. More than this, while at first sight, a large city would seem to be a more fitting place for an institution so public in its character, second thought will say that the smaller place, with its healthier moral tone—the absence of the saloon, besides other and worse adjuncts to a large city—has arguments of a weighty character. It is for these reasons, we have a strong belief that Docorah will have fairly equal chances when the question is decided.
Additional Subscriptions. During the past week the following additions have been made to the College rebuilding subscription, carrying the total close to $8,000;
