the first grade bringing total registration to 217. Their boy's baseball and girl's softball teams enjoyed a very successful fall season. The boys were undefeated with a record of 7 and 0; the girls won 11 consecutive games after dropping their first two contests.

The most Reverend Francis Beckman, Archbishop of Dubuque, confirmed a class of 203 at Saint Francis Church.

The public school faculty this year included: Supt. Radtke, Jud Miller,William Hughes, Edith Sykes, Catherine White, Loretto McGary, Margaret Rud and Beth Cole.

The graduates—called the largest class in the history of the public school— were: Gertrude Berge, Victor Bonfig, Donald DeCou, Richard Dvorak, Goldie Elleson, Iva Nell Ginapp, Genevieve Huber, Lois Huether, Alden Knudsvig, Edna Lee, Helen Larson, Mildred Peck, Herbert Sersland, Edwin Soreide, Bernice Stangland and Oliver Tangen.

Dorothy Schulze was the winner of the Winneshiek county spelling contest this year. Dorothy was the honored guest at a dinner served in the home of Blanche Rosa, the champion in 1926.

A commercial club was organized at a meeting of businessmen held in the legion rooms. Cleo Cahill was elected president; Charles Becker, vice president; and James Dessel, secretary.

Hairbreath Harry, former king of the hoboes, was an overnight "guest" of the town. Harry listed his platform for this fall's election at Britt as; "A nosebag for every nose and a nudist colony on every farm."

Ossian's barbers have lowered the price of hair cuts for grade school children to twenty five cents.

Paul Swanson of Monona purchased the old Blanchaine building from the Citizens State Bank. He will remodel the lower floor for a movie theater with a seating capacity of three hundred.

The county corn husking contest was held on the Fred Zweibohmer farm south of Ossian. Andrew Hemesath became champion by picking 26 bushels (1845 lbs.) in the allotted period of eighty minutes. Mrs. Helen Kleve placed second in the women's competition. Her output was 298 lbs.—just 5 lbs. less than the winner, Mrs. Julius Selness.

Victor Tinderholt, Laura Marie Riveland and Dorothy Schulze won their respective divisions in the sub-county declamatory contest. Laura was awarded a first in the dramatic division at the county competition, and went on to win first place in the sub-state event at Cresco.

Jackie Sand, the 14 year old daughter of John Sand, was thrilled by a visit with movie star Jane Withers on the set of "Shooting High", a picture co-staring Gene Autry. Mrs. Skeet Gallagher, an assistant to Louella Parsons, and friend of Jacqueline's aunt, arranged the outing. The girls got along famously. They started a correspondence that lasted for several years.

There were still depression prices at Ossian's mercantile establishments this year. Coast to Coast store offered: flat wall paint @ 54¢ a gal.; motor oil for 39¢ a gal.; and hammer handles @ 4¢ each. Cahill's market advertised: beef roast @ 15¢ a lb.; ice cream for 24¢ a qt.; and a Saturday special of double dip cones —2 for a nickel. E. H. Anderson listed: Monarch coffee—3 lbs for 69¢; P. & G. soap—10 bars for 31¢ and Mother's Best flour @ $1.39 a sack. G. L. Becker suggested: enameled pail and dipper for 69¢; roller skates @ 98¢ a pr.; and a ball and bat for only 69¢. Nic-Andy Cafe offered a Mother's Day dinner for 60¢. Reilly's Tavern advertised a 24 btl. case of Wisconsin beer for $1.49.

Some of the bargains advertised during Dollar Day promotions this year were: bath towels—10 for $1; card tables for $1; cream can—$1; six gallons of gasoline only $1; one quart of paint and brush for $1; chambray shirts—2 for $1; wash dresses—3 for $1; Big Ben soap—25 bars for $1; Big Chief overalls—$1; Fordon hats @ $1; and Bliss coffee—six pounds for $1.
